VACANCY FOR MORNING PLAYGROUND SUPERVISOR
We have a vacancy for a morning Playground Supervisor; the hours are 8.30am – 8.50am for 5 mornings per week during term time. The rate of pay is £6.38 per hour.
The applicant for this role would also be required to take on any emergency cover for the Crossing Patrol in case of absence (which will be from 8.15am). Full training will be given.

CROSSING PATROL – STARTS NOW
Our new Crossing Patrol, Mrs Hann, has been trained and is now in position to cross the children over College Road.
If you are allowing your children to walk alone to school please can we ask that you remind them of the Green Cross Code and keeping safe near the busy road.

REMINDER - BUILDING WORK IMPACT ON SCHOOL ENTRANCE
During building works the front entrance will be closed off.
To access the school from College Road a temporary alternative path has been laid down and a door bell fitted to the door to the right of the current entrance.
This door will only be open between 8.30–8.50am and between 3.00–3.20pm.
At all other times please ring the door bell and wait for one of the office staff to come round and open the door. Whenever possible please use the main entrance by the hall while the front entrance is out of order. All clubs should be collected via the hall entrance. Thank you.

CHESS CLUB ERROR
The club list should have said Years 4-6 not Years 3-6, sadly we do not have enough Chess sets for all of KS2. We are sorry to get the hopes up of any Year 3 children.

BAGS 2 SCHOOL COLLECTION
Thank you to all who had a good clear-out for the Friends charity bag collection – about 80 bags were collected and we will let you know shortly how much this has raised.

AFTER SCHOOL DRAMA & MUSICAL THEATRE CLASSES
Fiona McAlpine has been teaching after school drama to children for over ten years.
These classes take place at St. Michael’s Rooms and help with confidence-building, voice, comedy and acting skills. Children interested are welcome to try out any of the drama classes.
There is also a new Musical Theatre class for children interested in singing and dancing, and who don’t necessarily study dance or singing elsewhere.
New Musical Theatre class for 7-11 year olds. Wednesdays, 18th January – 6th February
Learn to sing and dance a musical number! This class is for children who enjoy singing and dancing, and want to be able to put over a song confidently. They will be learning songs from musicals and pop songs. £4 per lesson or £15 for 4 lessons in advance.

ADMISSIONS CONSULTATIONS 2013/14
On the County Council website - www.suffolk.gov.uk/consultations - proposed 2013/14 arrangements for admissions to Suffolk Community & Voluntary Controlled schools are available for consultation. Parents who are interested (ie those with children who are due to start in Reception or who are due to move to High School in September 2013) are able to use the online reply form to comment on the proposed policies. The deadline for consultation is 28 February 2012. There are also hard copies of the arrangements and forms at the school office. Our Voluntary Aided school proposed admission policy for 2013/14 is on page 149 of this document - any comments regarding our policy should come back directly to the school.
Page 161 of the document indicates that Thomas Mills High School (as an Academy) has adopted the County policy for Community and Voluntary Controlled schools.

In the National Gallery the children got to see some of the most famous paintings in the World such as this picture by Roussseau - a large version of this has hung in our school hall for over 10 years.

Outside the National Gallery and in Covent Garden there was lots of great street entertainers.

The main reason for going to London was to see Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Opera House - see above and below.

BUILDING WORK DUE TO START ON REPAIRING FRONT ENTRANCE ROOF
Due to the extent of the repair work required, the front entrance will need be closed off. Yesterday, at St. Michael's church, Year 3 and 4 classes (RV, KT and PLDD) rounded off the term in fitting style by leading the carol service with an entertaining performance entitled, 'Children of the World'.

The children shared with the congregation a series of Christmas traditions from 6 different countries: USA, China, Australia, Malawi, Ireland and Poland while also singing songs linked to each of the countries.

Rev Graham Owen closed the service by reminding us all about the true meaning of Christmas.

Having studied the Tudors this half term it was the perfect way to finish off what has been a superb topic.
The day started off with a series of workshops where the children could learn a skill or craft.

LOST PROPERTY
There are lots of items in our lost property container. Can we please encourage all children and parents to seek for lost items in the container sited at the end of the corridor at the top of the stairs above the Nursery. Needless to say, lots of the items are unnamed – so please can we ask that parents ensure names are on all personal items brought into school – especially sweatshirts. ANY ITEMS NOT CLAIMED BY FRIDAY 16 DECEMBER WILL BE GIVEN TO THE FRIENDS CHARITY BAG COLLECTION ON 13 JANUARY.

SICKNESS & DIARRHOEA
We have had a number of children come down very quickly with upset tummy’s last week. Please can we remind parents that if your child is affected they should be kept off for 48 hours after the last bout of sickness or diarrhoea to prevent infecting other pupils, thank you.

NATIVITY COLLECTIONS
We would like to thank everyone who gave so generously to the charity collections at the end of the Nativity plays last week, the collections have raised £491.
After covering any costs in relation to the plays, the balance of the collections will go to the EACH appeal.

DISCO SUCCESS
The Friends would like to thank everyone who helped with the Christmas Disco on Friday which raised £515, this will go towards funding school projects over the coming year.

FILM NIGHT – Friday 20 January
The Friends film night in January will be a screening of ‘The Smurfs’. Booking forms will be sent out in the New Year.

SPRING TERM DATES
There is a non-pupil day on Tuesday 3 January and the children return to school on Wednesday 4 January 2012.

Key Stage 1 Nativity Play was Brilliant

Children from Years 1 and 2 put on a fantastic Nativity play this year called: Prickly Hay.

It had a Wild West theme with cowboys in addition to all the usual cast of wise men, sheep and inn keepers.

The play also featured some excellent narrators.

Prickly Hay was a riot of colour, singing, dancing and acting thouroughly enjoyed by parents and grandparents. A CD with 130 photos from both Nativity plays can be purchased from the school office.

The Foundation and KS1 plays raised nearly £500 in donations for charity.

Foundation Nativity Play a huge sucess

It featured the usual cast of angels, stars, animals and shepherds as well as a very clever soldier.

Singing Club go to Church

This Sunday Singing Club went to Church. We were invited to perform at St Michael's Family Service where we chose to sing two Christmas Carols and the Lords Prayer. Anna, Lucy and Alysha sang the first verse of a French Carol beautifully and went on to lead the other children with signing for the Lords Prayer. Thank you and well done to all those who took part. You sang beautifully.

CHRISTMAS PARTIES – Monday 12 December
Class parties will be held next Monday afternoon; Key Stage 2 children are to come to school in their party clothes. Key Stage 1 and Reception children should come to school in their uniform and bring their party clothes in to change into after lunch. Please ensure that party clothes and footwear are practical for normal morning lessons and outside playtimes.
Please note: Nursery Christmas party will be held on the last day of term in the morning.

YOUNG ART EAST ANGLIA COMPETITION & EXHIBITION REMINDER
Art work should be on the theme of “Fun & Games”, using any medium except bulky collage, no larger than A3 size and must not be mounted or laminated. The entry must be accompanied by a minimum donation of £2.00 for Cancer Research UK, and the child’s name, year and school name must be printed clearly on the back.
Selected entries will be included in an exhibition at the Peter Pears Gallery in Aldeburgh from 9-11 March 2012. To have exhibited artwork returned it will need to be purchased at the Gallery. BOOK FAIR COMMISSION
Thank you to all those who purchased from the book fair last week, from your purchases the school has made commission of £187, which has directly purchased books for every class.

THE GIVING MACHINE
This website which, once you have registered, you can use to do internet shopping at many online stores gives a % of your purchase price directly to the Friends (which you need to select as your nominated charity). Our Thursday lunchtime chess club is now in full swing. Mr Byer has a classroom packed with players and chess sets on Thursday lunchtimes. Beginners are welcome.

After Christmas Mr Byer also runs a competitive chess tournament. There is also the possibility of some matches against other schools.

Inter House Swimming Gala

Our biggest ever gala was held this week at the Fram College pool.

Over 110 children from years 5 and 6 took part in 30 races.

HOWARD house retained the trophy from last year.

Mills were 2nd, Bulstrode 3rd and Hitcham 4th.

This was also the first time that parents have been invited. This made for a great atmosphere during the gala.

Following the letter sent last week regarding strike action, we are now confirming that SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED TO PUPILS ON WEDNESDAY
EXCEPT for pupils in Nursery as this is a self contained Nursery unit, although there will be no Nursery Lunch club and Nursery pupils must be collected at 11.50am

CAN YOU HELP US KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE?
Despite previously advertising there have been no applications for the position of Crossing Patrol Officer. Is there a parent, grandparent, relative, neighbour or friend who would be interested in this job? It entails a total of 6 ½ hours per week, to cover mornings and afternoons. Job share will be considered.
The rate of pay is £6.47ph, with a half pay retainer during the holidays.

I am sorry to let parents know that Mrs Morgan has now decided to fully retire from school. We will be very sad to see her leave at the end of this term, and will advise parents in class DB/GM shortly of her replacement. I am delighted to announce that Mrs Spencer has given birth to a lovely baby boy, Joseph. All the staff and pupils send the family many congratulations and good wishes on this lovely news.

FRIENDS CHRISTMAS CRAFT MARKET
The Friends would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all the children and their families who came along to the Christmas Craft Market last Friday. The support for this event was fantastic and we raised an amazing £1270! We would also like to say a very special thank you to all the families who donated items on the non-uniform day. Without your generosity, we simply would not have been able to raise such an impressive amount. And not forgetting our Year 6 helpers, who did a brilliant job of manning some of our stalls, being our festive human fruit machine and of course, excellent little helpers for Santa. Well done!
The Friends committee constantly strives to organise successful fundraising events, which are memorable and fun for all the family. This week has seen a range of activities across the school looking at road safety.

We need a new Crossing Patrol person.

The design above is by Julitte Lee (upper KS2) and below by Kate Simpson (lower KS2).

The designs have been used on posters advertising for a new lollipop person.

At the end of the week the children were allowed to wear a bright item of clothing. They paid a small amount of money towards charity BRAKE.

Be BRIGHT, Be SEEN

Nursery children drew round one of the boys and then painted him in bright colours.

Our Junior Road Safety Officers went around Framlingham asking shop keepers to put up posters.

Foundation and Key Stage 1 have been making hand prints. We are keen to highlight the dangers for young children crossing the road. We are encouraging them to hold hands with an older child or an adult.

We are hoping to make enough hands to go around the whole school building.

The children in year 6 English have just finished reading (together) a book by Louis Sachar called 'There's a boy in the girl's bathroom'. They talked about recommending the book to other readers and how to write a book review.

My Book Review For ‘There’s a Boy in the Girls Bathroom’

The author is Louis Sachar. Louis Sachar has written books including: The Boy Who Lost His Face, Dogs Don’t Tell Jokes, 5 different Wayside School stories and the bestseller HOLES.

The story is set in Red Hill School, America present day.

The main characters are Bradley Chalkers and Jeff Fishkin. Bradley was an unpopular boy in Red Hill School until Jeff came and made friends with him. Now they are always together. Jeff and Bradley both have to see the new counsellor, Miss Davis. Jeff joins a new gang and Bradley is left alone again. Bradley plays with his toys as if they are in a role play about what happens each day.
Bradley is invited to Colleen’s birthday party they play party games and compete for points. Bradley watches as Colleen opens her presents, finally she opens the one Bradley gave her. It’s a replica of the human heart.

I thought the book was funny and entertaining. I would recommend this book to others between the ages of 8 – 12 .My star rating is *****

There’s a boy in the girls’ bathroom

Louis Sachar, the author of Holes, Small Steps, Pig City, and the Boy Who lost his face; dogs don’t tell jokes and the wayside school series.
The story is set in modern America

The main characters are Bradley Chalkers a boy with behavior problems. Jeff Fishkin a polite, kind boy who is also the new boy. Colleen Merrigold, a sweet shy girl who has a crush on Jeff. Melinda is the quiet girl who has a mean side to her. Lori is the loudest girl in the school and hates Bradley more than anyone. Carla is the new counselor and likes Bradley; she also tries to get Bradley more like kind Jeff.

The story is about a boy called Bradley who has behavior problems, with the new councilor Bradley doesn’t get any better, only worse. But their friendship grew stronger and Bradley turns more polite then disaster strikes.

The girls and the boys get in a fight, they start calling each other names then it turns into a fight, Bradley and Jeff both get black eyes but they blame it on each other. Then everyone in the school turns on Bradley.

I think the book was really funny, lots of parts made me laugh out loud!
I would recommend it to 8-12 year olds, even though everyone would love it!

Annie Miller Year 6

13 Secrets

Name of book: 13 Secrets.

Author: Michelle Harrison, she was born in Grays Essex. She has also written sequels. The first one (Two before this):13 Treasures then 13 Curses and finally the one I`m doing 13 Secrets.

Setting of the story: The story setting moves around quite a bit but the main 2 settings are the Manor and the Fairy Realm. But you never know what part of time its set but I would say modern England.

Characters: There are so many characters in this book. But the main three are Rowen a red headed child with a lively feisty spirit but she is really worried about Eldron an evil fairy set out to kill her. Then there Tanya a positive small girl who’s best friends with Rowen and finally Fabian a born scientist with a love of fairies he plays an important part in solving the murders in the fairy real. There are 13 fairies or changeling children who are part of the coven but half of them get murdered. It`s not a story for the weak stomached!

A bit about the story: One of the murders in the story is really gruesome they find one of the murdered in the coven got put on a roof she had a sun disease and died of that and also got peaked to death!

I thought the book was good I give it 5 stars but it gave me nightmares I say you should be 10 to read it.

Billy the Kid

Michael Morpurgo is one of the best Britain’s selling children’s author.

The story has been set in world war two out in the open.
Billy (who is a kid/child) is one of the main characters in the story
He is kind and would always look after his family in any dangers.
The story is about a young boy who loves football but now the second world war is here what could go wrong…
After the death of Billy’s dad Billy tries to hold on to the rest of his family and his life. What will happen next….
I think others should read this book because it is a very moving and thrilling book to read. You can also learn a lot.

I recommend it to others because of the brilliant idea. I would say 10 years and up could read it.

The Hobbit

To start, this book review is about the Hobbit by JRR Tolkien who published it in 1937. Its main character is Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit. The Bagginses have always been neat, tidy, normal family of hobbits. But Bilbo was part Tookish so a adventurous streak resigned in his veins. But he’s mainly sticking to the Baggins side of him at the moment. There was a knock on the door and a merry band of dwarves come into Bilbo’s home. Their names are Dwali, Balin, Kili, Fili, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bombur (Fatso☻), and Thorin, leader, and son of the king under the mountain. Not to mention Gandalf the wise wizard. And they’re on a quest. A quest to steal the gold from a dragon!

A Book Review for “There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom”

This book is written by Louis Sachar. Louis Sachar has also written the book HOLES.
The story was set in a school in America. The book was set in modern day.

The main characters were Bradley, who was based on Louis Sachar himself, Jeff, the new boy at the school, Carla, who was the counsellor of the school, and three girls called Lori, Melinda and Colleen. In the story Bradley is a naughty boy who never hands in his homework.

The story is about Bradley who goes to see the new school counsellor. When a new boy called Jeff comes to the school Bradley makes friends with him but then Jeff joins another gang Bradley is not happy. Bradley plays with his toys because he has no friends and makes them act out his school day.

Bradley is invited to Colleen’s birthday party. Jeff was invited to Colleen’s birthday party as well. They both went and played many games. Bradley ended up with the most points at the end of the games and won a prize. Bradley gave Colleen a replica of the human heart because Carla told him to give a gift from the heart.

I thought the book was very good and funny.
I would recommend this book to others. I would recommend this book to children aged 8-12 years old. I thought this book was brilliant and I really liked the humour in the book. The book made you want to read on by getting into the story straight away and by putting short chapters in. I mark the book *****

Name of book: Time Riders The Eternal War

Author: Alex Scarrow

Setting: In 2001 New York and in 1837 New York

Main Characters: Maddy, Sal, Liam, Bob, Becks, Lincon and Colonels Wainwright and Deaveru

Story: Maddy, Sal and Liam should have died in either the past or future but were recruited be a man called Foster to protect history from time travel. They’ve got two meat robots called Bob and Becks. They’ve got technology from the future so they are constantly living either on the 10th or 11th September 2001. They’re placed around 9/11 so nobody would really take interest in an archway which the Time Riders are hiding in.

A mysterious time traveller causes the horses on a cart to bolt killing Abraham Lincon. Liam, Sal and Bob go to rescue him because he has been erased from history. Lincon then follows the Time Riders into the future. He sees 9/11 on the news but because of the super technology it hasn’t happen yet. Lincon goes outside and says that the Twin Towers will fall down; and when they do the police take him away because they think he’s a terrorist. Liam, Sal and Bob set off to find him because without him the American Civil War will never end!

I think it’s a really good book and I would recommend it to 10+ children.

POSSIBLE STRIKE ACTION - WEDNESDAY 30 NOVEMBER

Dear Parent / Carer,

As I am sure you are aware a number of public sector unions are in dispute with the government over proposed changes to public sector pensions, and will be taking part in strike action on Wednesday 30 November. This action involves both teachers and support staff.

Local Authority advice states that “During strike action it is not lawful for an employer to engage temporary staff to cover the work. No supply staff will therefore be employed to cover members who are on strike, and no other teacher will be required to cover that work either”.

As of today, based on the current number of union members who have indicated that they will be taking action it seems likely that the whole school will be closed to pupils next Wednesday

I am sure you will appreciate that this situation is beyond my control. The safety and care of pupils throughout the day is paramount and any decision to close the school to pupils will not be taken lightly. Due to the lack of clarity at this stage, I am giving you notice of a possible closure so that those families who need to make alternative arrangements for the care of their children on that day can do so.

As soon as I am certain of the union members’ final decisions I will inform you via your child’s book bag, the school Blog, and on notices around the school.

Mr Byer is back to start Chess Club from Thursday 24 November for pupils in years 5 & 6. The club will be held in class GA/JB from 12.30pm – 1.15pm

POSSIBLE STRIKE ACTION – WEDNESDAY 30 NOVEMBER
As you will be aware unions within the public sector are proposing strike action on Wednesday 30 November in response to changes to Teachers’ and local Government Pensions.
Union members have the right to strike and we are not allowed to cover for them;
this may mean that there will possibly be a school closure on this day.
We will keep parents informed and will give as much notice as possible.

HITCHAMS HOLY HORRORS & NATIVITY PLAY
Reminder there is no Holy Horrors this week. IF THERE IS A STRIKE on Wednesday 30 November HHH will meet in the Church at 3pm, if only some classes are not at school it will still meet at the church and HHH pupils who are at school will be walked to the Church. Healthy living theatre production

All of our children were treated to a brilliant show from the Quantum Theatre company.

They visit us every year to put on their own plays about science.

This year the play was all about healthy food and lifestyles called Personal Best.

Some of our children got to join in the play.

The show included a snappy tune which helped the children remember the key elements of a healthy diet.

Year 3 read to Reception children

On Thursday, members of Mr Vaughan`s Year 3 and 4 Literacy set visited classes CH and KM to read a selection of children`s stories they had been writing this week.

The stories were based on a short film entitled `El Caminante`, a daring tight-rope walker who entertains members of a small Spanish town.

Each child had to write the story in 6 pages with each page containing illustrations and short, simple sentences.

The children of CH and KM thoroughly enjoyed the experience of having slightly older children read to them and the Year 3 and 4 children learnt a great deal from the time spent in the two reception classes.

On Friday 4th November 2011, Class E.M had their share session. Our theme was fireworks and Bonfire Night. In the activity area we made bonfire and firework collages and in the classroom our activities included wax scraping pictures, crosswords, poems and tangrams.

We all had great fun and the parents enjoyed it too. Thank-you Mrs Harold and Mrs Waddell for organising it for us!

Ex pupils star in 'Annie' at Thomas Mills High School

The Thomas Mills High School production of 'ANNIE' was a huge sucess this week.

Our year 5 and 6 classes were lucky to watch a matinee performance earlier this week.

It was great to see so many of our former pupils taking part as musicians, actors, singers and dancers in this fantastic show.

Class GA/JB had a great turnout of parents for their SHARE afternoon.

Together they made Tudor houses.

In lessons we have been creating Tudor crime stories. The characters would live in these houses.

Everybody enjoyed building and decorating the houses. They look great now they are finished. Some children even took theirs home to do extra work on the inside.

CURSIVE WRITING IN FOUNDATION & KEY STAGE 1
Thank you for your enthusiasm in joining our trial of cursive writing during the Summer Term. After discussions following the trial, we feel that there is great benefit to teaching cursive writing as soon as possible. Cursive writing will aid spellings, fluency and formation. We will be introducing this style of writing and by the beginning of the Summer Term all children will be writing in this way. If you would like a copy of the letter formation and style that we are using, please see your class teacher.

STAFF CAR PARK SAFETY CONCERNS
Some members of staff have raised their concerns about children and families walking up the driveway to the school rather than the footpath and also children running across the staff car park when staff are trying to park in the morning. Please can we ask that you are vigilant with your children in the drive and near the car park and ensure that the path is used at all times to keep them safe. Thank you.

PARKING COMPLAINT – COUCY CLOSE & NEW ROAD
We have received complaints from residents from Coucy Close and New Road with regards to school parents blocking driveways (particularly last Friday afternoon) and also parking in clearly marked designated parking spaces.
PLEASE can we again ask parents to be considerate when they park on the roads around the school and DO NOT PARK where it will cause a residents access to be blocked or to park in designated parking spaces for residents.

Cycling Proficiency Tests Take Place

24 children sucessfully completed their cycling proficiency course with a test on the streets of Framlingham.

The children had to demonstrate left and right turns, use of junctions, hand signals and safe stopping.

The tests were superbly organised by Mr Byer with the help of 9 other adults acting as supervisors and assessors.

Christmas Shoe Boxes Ready

Children from SRH Framlingham have knidly put together over 40 Christmas present boxes.

They have to be ready well before Christmas so that they can be sent around the World to children who might not otherwise get anything for Christmas this year.

26 children from Middleton, Dennington, Saxmundham, Charsfield, Peasenhall, Kelsale and Framlingham came together with children's author Josh Lacey for a day of creative writing.

Josh Lacey (author) read an extract from his first book GRK and told the children about the idea he had for the book which inspired him to write it, then how that small fact started a chain of thoughts and he used his imagination to create ideas.

What did they do:

• 1 minute to write as many words starting with the letter B
• 2 minutes to write about something you love or hate saying why - fact

• 2 minutes to write about the same thing, but opposite why, ie if you loved the thing, you now say why you hate it - fiction

• Write the same thing again but without using any words with the letter E in

• Pair up and tell partner about your favourite book and why you like it

• Create a character either person, animal or object describe : who/ what, gender, age, appearance, family, home, occupation, want, fear, name

• Create a second Character different to previous ie person, animal or object. Describe as above and draw it. Tell the table about your character

• Create a third character - describe as above, tell whole group

The author told everyone the 3 things that a story needs:

1. Characters
2. Setting

3. Plot

He said before you start writing:

1. Think about the tense that you write it in- past or present

2. Think about whether to write as 1st person or 3rd person

Write a story using 2 of your characters
Think about the plot - where they are going to meet and what will happen...
Pick a setting (from a box of settings the author has thought up), the story must start here....
ie: in the zoo, top of a mountain, in a car driving too fast, on a boat, in the middle of a big city, in a cave, on a staircase, at the circus, trapped in a lift, locked in a very old house, trapped in a lift.

The title can be decided as you write the story.

Get started...

After 5 mins, get a few of the children to read their opening .... Great to have a beginning that starts in the middle of an action, or one that has dramatic effect, one that leads us to want to know more.

Re-read your beginning, re-write it if you're unhappy, else continue with the story.....

Stopped after 15 minutes, re-read your story, as if you're reading it for first time and don't know what is going to happen. Is it exciting? Is it interesting? Does it make sense? Correct and move on..

Get a trusted friend to read, ask their opinion. ... pass to partner on table, and listen to their comments and talk about what you will do next.

Remember to include dialogue in the story, use it to help introduce characters and move the story along.

Continue writing for 15 minutes.

Read some out to whole group who feedback what they like about it so far, and what could help improve.

Continue writing, make sure you have introduced both characters and used dialogue.

The author also answered questions from the pupils about how to get published, and how to find a publisher.
He also signed copies of his books for the pupils to buy.

Feedback on day

Well done to all 4 of our pupils (Anna, Annie, Kasper & Toby) who have written some great stories, worked really hard, been very creative and were impeccably behaved.

Kasper read his adventure story to the whole group at the end, the author thought it was great with all the interesting vocabulary he used, and the drama of his story. The group all thought it was an exciting start.

Anna also read her story about a fox in which she had used some excellent descriptive story-telling, the author thought the fox was a really interesting character.

ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK EVENT – Friday 25 November
To tie in with Road Safety Awareness Week at the end of November we would like the children to wear a BRIGHTLY COLOURED or FLUORESCENT accessory to school on Friday 25 November – this could be a scarf, some socks, gloves or hat etc.
We would ask that a donation of between 50p – £1.00 be handed to the class teacher on that day. The donations will go to ‘BREAK’ – the road safety charity who help people who have been injured or support families of those tragically killed in road accidents.

PARKING ON NEW ROAD – ATLAS FRAM REQUEST
Atlas Fram have written to ask that we please remind parents not to park on their premises in New Road, or to block access to their car park as the site is in use with vehicles continuously.
In addition, they are concerned that pupils from local schools are using their car-park as a cut through having no regard for driver blind-spots. For the safety of the children please can we ask that if any of your children do walk to school that you ensure they do not cut through this busy site. Thank you.

Class DB Share Afternoon 'Goes Down' Well!

We had a huge turnout of parents and grandparents to our Share afternoon last week.

The theme was on Forces - looking at Gravity and Air Resistance in particular.

The children and adults made helicopters, parachutes and paper planes.

The helicopters and parachutes were tested (with a stopwatch) down the stairwell.

The paper planes (various shapes) were tested on the playground to see which ones flew the furthest or stayed in the air the longest.

Ben, Emily and Lucy went to Bury St Edmunds cathedral for a special service for 200 years of Church Schools. At the start we paraded the banner through the middle of the cathedral. The bishop put the banner at the front of the cathedral. We went to the side of the cathedral and some people explained why we had this birthday. We watched some dancing which was very good. A reading was read by a nearby school. Here are some photos of the day.

RECORDER CLUB
We are sorry, but due to a shortage of available musical staff we are only able to now offer Recorders to Year 3. Mrs Hopkins and Mrs Eyles will be running this on Wednesday lunchtimes. Separate letters are being sent to Year 3 pupils this week.

WESTMINSTER ABBEY – A report from Mrs Picton
Last Friday Revd Owen and I accompanied 7 children from our school to London where we took part in the National Celebrations for the 200 years of Church Schools at Westminster Abbey. We were very honoured to be chosen to take part in these celebrations along with 3 other schools in our Diocese.
Revd Owen and I were so proud of the children - Amy, Eleanor, Isabel, Lucy, Oscar, Sam and Zac – who were wonderful ambassadors for our school.

ST EDMUNDSBURY CATHEDERAL – A report from Mrs Picton
As part of the national celebrations for Church Schools on Sunday 16 October Ben, Lucy and Emily from Year 6, with their families, joined a great number of other Church Schools at St Edmundsbury Cathedral. They carried our new school banner in the procession during a service led Bishop Nigel Stock.
It was a wonderful event re-affirming the very special place of Church Schools in Suffolk.
Our three representatives carried our banner with purpose and pride.

SUFFOLK SPORTS PARTNERSHIP – A report from Mrs Picton
On Sunday 16 October Mr Brook and I represented our school at the Ipswich and South Suffolk School Sports Partnership awards. We were proud to have been shortlisted along with 2 other schools; although we did not win the award it was an honour to be recognized as one of the great sports provider schools. My grateful thanks go to all the staff, past and present, who made our nomination possible.

School Football Team Win District Tournament

Yesterday afternoon saw the annual primary schools tournament held at Stradbroke High School.

There were 12 large schools teams divided into 2 groups.

Our B Team had a great time winning their group with 4 wins ( vs Wilby, Laxfield, St Aspal and Fressingfield ) from their 5 matches. Credit must go to captain Guy Blades for his outstanding leadership and most of the B team goals. Thanks also go to Mr James Cantrell for coaching and managing our B team. Several members of the team are in year 5 so will look to get into the A side next year.

Our A Team started well with a 4-0 win against St Aspal but followed this up with a poor performance v Mellis (losing 2-1). This was followed by a frustrating 0-0 v Debenham. Despite dominating possession Fram could not beat their keeper and had to settle for a 0-0 draw. This meant that 2 good wins were needed to get into the semi finals. The boys now started to really play well to beat St Botolphs 4-0 and Fressingfield 6-0 to finish runners up in their group.

This meant that the 2 Framlingham teams played each other in the semi. The other semi was between Debenham and Stonham.

Fram A ran out 3-0 winners to progress to the final v Debenham.

It proved to be a dramatic final. Fram had all the early chances with Oli Smith going close several times. Debenham then took the lead through their only shot at our goal. Oli scored a well deserved equaliser in the last minute. This took the game into extra time. Fram again created plenty of chances with the best one falling to Daniel Smith in the last few seconds. However, the excellent Debenham keeper kept the shot out.

We then had a penalty shoot out. Fram captain Jake went first and scored, followed by Oli and Daniel. Debenham also scored all 3 of their kicks. It was now 'sudden death'. Eddie Pocher volunteered to take the penalty and confidently tucked it into the corner. Now it was David Dyer's turn to be the hero. He saved the next Debenham kick to make Fram the champions.

New School Banner Finished

This lovely bannered is the product of a huge amount of team work.

KS2 children came up with ideas (drawings) and Mrs Dwyer put them together into one design.

A group of children then cut out all of the various parts of the design and a team of adults (Mrs Turner, Mrs Pascoe, Mrs Borg, Mrs Spencer and Mrs Reeve) did the sewing.

The 3 children pictured above will be carrying the banner in a special service in Bury Cathedral this Sunday.

It’s that time of year again, when we need to place our order for the Christmas turkey in order to meet SCC Catering deadlines! The school Christmas Lunch will be on Wednesday 14 December. It is a fun and sociable event and children are invited to join in even if they do not normally have a school meal.

There will be NO Nursery Lunch Club on this day.
Children choosing to bring a packed lunch will eat in the hall with everyone else as usual.
Please tell us if your child will want a Christmas Lunch, a Vegetarian option or will bring a packed lunch by completing the slip below.
Please return the slip by Tuesday 18 October at the latest, if you select a Christmas dinner, we are afraid that you will not be able to change your mind nearer the time.

Please pay on Monday 12 December if you are having a school lunch.
The cost of Christmas Lunch will be £3.00. If your child is entitled to free school meals, there is no charge.

YOUNG ART EAST ANGLIA COMPETITION & EXHIBITION
We have recently received information about the 2012 Young Art East Anglia competition.
If your child would like to take part in this, they should produce a piece of art work on the theme of “Fun & Games”, using any medium except bulky collage.
It should be no larger than A3 size and must not be mounted or laminated.
The entry must be accompanied by a minimum donation of £2.00 which will help to raise money for Cancer Research UK, and the child’s name, year and school name must be printed clearly on the back.
First, second and third prizes are to be awarded in each age-group (Reception to Year 2, Years 3-4, Years 5-6) and all prize-winning entries, as well as a percentage of pictures from each school, will be included in an exhibition at the Peter Pears Gallery in Aldeburgh from 9-11 March 2012.
Postcards of all exhibited work will be for sale at the exhibition.
To have exhibited artwork returned it will need to be purchased at the Gallery.
Please hand all entries in to our own school office by Friday 13 January 2012.

The clergy at St Michael’s Church would like to say how lovely it was to see the pets at their service last week, and that as a result of people's generosity they have been able to send a cheque for £25 to St Mungos. They plan to have another pet service next October.

A special assembly was held this week to celebrate SRH Framlingham's role in 200 years of Church schools in England. The celebration was led by the Deputy Director of Education for the Suffolk Diocese - Mr Gourlay.

Key Stage 1 children made their own candles and read some prayers.

Our house captains made presentations about our school history.

We were presented with a special clock and candle marking 200 years of church schools.

SRH Framlingham has been short listed (along with 3 other schools) for the County Sports School of the Year. Mr Brook, Mrs Picton and Mr Vaughan will be going to a ceremony at Trinity Park, Ipswich on Sunday 16th October.

After such a brilliant year of sport throughout our school (clubs, houses and school teams) we are hoping to do well. We will let you know how we get on.

1 week deadline - please return by Tuesday 11 October
It is essential that we maintain accurate up-to-date pupil data, especially for emergency contacts and medical details.
With this letter please find a copy of the latest pupil data we have for your child/ren.
Please check the details and write on any necessary amendments, sign the sheet at the bottom and then return it to the school office.
Emergency Contacts: It has been noted that some children have only 1 contact number – obviously if there is an emergency with your child and that number is unanswered it means we have no alternative contact. Wherever possible can you please provide more than 1 contact person / number.
Other Information: The system will only allow us to enter 1 selection for Travel Arrangements - if your child uses the school bus even if occasionally, please tick ‘School Bus’; otherwise tick the mode of transport that is used most frequently.
Keeping these details up to date at all times is very important and if any information should change during the year, please let us know.
Please return the signed data sheet to us no later than Tuesday 11 October.

SHINING AS LIGHTS IN THE WORLD CELEBRATION – Wednesday 5 October
The Deputy Diocesan Director of Education will be joining our school family for an act of Collective Worship to celebrate 200 years of Church of England Schools this Wednesday.

MORNING LINE UP & BAG DROP OFF
Please can we ask parents not to come into school after the 8.45am bell goes. If your child has not had time to take their bags in before lining up, please just give them their things to bring in as they line up. We are aiming to encourage independence and to also reduce the congestion in the corridors. Thank you.

NO FILM NIGHT THIS TERM
The Friends have sadly been unable to secure a suitable film for a Film Night this term, however they hope to sort one for early in the New Year.

HARVEST FESTIVAL DONATION THANKS
Thank you to everyone who brought in donations for the Harvest Festivals last week. The food items have been taken to West Villa Homeless Families Unit in Ipswich, in addition we received £200 from the collection which will go to the Soup Kitchen in Ipswich.

NEW ROAD TRAFFIC CONGESTION
We are fearful of the safety of the children in the morning on New Road, we are finding again that parents are pulling up or parking on the double yellow lines, in the school drive or in front of the cycle shop. All this causes dangers for the families trying to cross the road and to get safely into school as it restricts visibility and causes other drivers to pull out to accelerate past. Please can we ask that you find a safe place to park in the morning that will not cause a danger.

CELEBRATION ASSEMBLIES – QUIET PLEASE!
I was disappointed that some parents were chatting during class CA assembly last Friday. We do expect the pupils to be quiet during assemblies and show respect to the class or teacher leading the assembly, it is difficult to enforce this if there is noise coming from families. The children work very hard to prepare themselves for their class celebration assemblies and we would ask that if you have come along to see your child present, that you do remain quiet and not cause a distraction. Please can we also remind you that if you have to bring younger siblings to the assembly we would ask that you take them out of the hall if they start to cause a disturbance. Thank you for your co-operation in this.

CHRISTMAS CRAFT MARKET

The Friends are delighted to announce that November's event will be a Christmas Craft Market. Based on feedback from last year's shopping evening, we have decided to make this an event for the whole family to enjoy, with a smaller selection of stalls, focussing on handmade, unique and affordable craft items, as well as some traditional Christmas Fair activities for the children/adults, such as a raffle, tombola, Guess the weight of the Christmas Cake and meet Santa in his Grotto.
We already have a number of stalls allocated but if you have a talent for making beautiful craft items and would like a stall at the event, please contact Catherine Hill (07977 206587). The Friends would love to hear from you.

NON-UNIFORM DAY - FRIDAY 18 NOVEMBER
In support of the Christmas Craft Market event, there will be a non-uniform day on
Friday 18 November. The children may come to school in their own clothes in return for a donation to the Christmas event.

Class NS have been composing a piece of Tudor style music on Friday mornings with our brilliant visiting music teacher - Mrs Rayner.

The children played xylophones, clarinet, recorders, guitars, drums and keyboards. There is also singing and dancing.

Every Wednesday after school sees the HHH club meet up for some food, drink, art & craft, stories, singing and prayers. The club has become very popular with over 35 children and 5 adults (including 3 of our governors).

This year we have started a brilliant new scheme. A whole class has the chance to learn an instrument. A teacher from the county service has provided an instrument for every member of class RV and has run a weekly lesson for them. Hopefully some of these children will be inspired to learn to play the instrument on a permanent basis.

NEWSLETTERS WILL NOW COME HOME ON A TUESDAY
We have been producing the weekly newsletter on a Monday for the past year. We are finding that new information comes up on a Monday, but we are unable to get it onto the letter to be copied and handed out to all children in time for the end of school.
From next week the school newsletter will be given to the pupils on Tuesdays. The letter may be emailed / on the BLOG either by the end of Monday or on Tuesday morning.

‘MEET THE TEACHER’
Thank you to all those families who attended our ‘Meet the Teacher’ afternoon. We hope that you found it informative and useful. All of us agree that the first session was not as successful as the 2nd or 3rd due to the huge number of young children attending – we are considering alternative arrangements for this meeting next year, but if you have any suggestions we would be grateful to hear from you.

KEY STAGE EXPLANATIONS
We received a number of calls last week from parents unsure which ‘Key Stage’ their child was in. We assume that following the ‘Meet the Teacher’ sessions last week this has become clear to parents, however just to clarify if your child is in:
Year 1 or Year 2 they are in Key Stage 1
Year 3 or Year 4 they are in Lower Key Stage 2
Year 5 or Year 6 they are in Upper Key Stage 2
Reception and Nursery they are in Foundation Stage

BAGS 2 SCHOOL – Charity Collection
The Friends would like to advise parents that £220 has been received from Bags2School following the charity bag collection back in the summer term. The next collection date is Friday 13 January, which is ideal if you are having a clear-out after Christmas. Collection bags will be given out before the Christmas break.

QUIZ NIGHT & AGM
The Friends would like to thank Mr Brook for all his hard work in preparing the Quiz for their fundraising event last Friday, and also Mr Mulrenan and Mrs Hopkins for their help on the night. The event raised £175 and the Friends would like to thank all the families that came along to support the event and to attend the AGM.

FRIENDS QUIZ NIGHT & AGM – Friday 23 September
Just a reminder about the Friends family event this Friday; the Quiz night has been a great success in the past. Mr Brook is busy preparing an INTERACTIVE QUIZ, where teams, of up to 6, answer multiple choice questions on a variety of themes using Interactive Voting (like in 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire').
This year there will be additional questions the younger team members. This really is a family event, and last time we had 21 teams take part.
There is a licensed bar, tuck shop & soft drinks. Tickets are £2 per player.

CAN YOU HELP US KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE?
Despite widely advertising there have been no applications for the position of Crossing Patrol Officer.
We have been fortunate to receive funding for this post from our local Councillor, Councillor Colin Hart. We have been actively seeking to recruit someone for this post since July – is there a parent, grandparent, relative or friend who would be interested in this job?
It entails a total of 6 ½ hours per week, to cover mornings and afternoons.
The rate of pay is £6.47ph, with a half pay retainer during the holidays – we even supply a uniform! Job share will be considered. Please contact Mrs Hulley at the school office for details.

The Friends wish to advise parents that we have a delay with the smaller sizes of polo shirts, we are finding a short term substitute, but the earliest this will be available will be 3 weeks.

CORRECTION – BELLES ON BIKES
The recent flyer for the Belles on Bikes event has suggested that some of the money raised will go towards 'The Mills Charity Community Centre Project Fund’. However, a Mills Charity Community Centre Project Fund does not exist and unfortunately this flyer was produced without permission from The Mills Charity.

MORNING LINE UP
The morning lining up routine is working very well. The children’s readiness for learning has improved as they settle really quickly into their morning tasks.
Even in a short space of time the staff have seen an improvement in the children’s independence in their morning routines. Could we ask that Reception parents wait until the children have entered the building before leaving the fenced off area, as we have noticed a bottle-neck occurring at the lower school doors – thank you.

WHOLE CLASS MUSIC – Classes PL/DD, EM and RV
As part of the SCC ‘Wider Opportunities’ scheme we are receiving a delivery of clarinets for classes PL/DD and EM and brass instruments (Cornets, Tenor Horns & Baritone Horns) for class RV. Over this year the children will receive whole class music lessons on a Friday with teachers from the County Music Service.
After a few weeks the children will be able to take the instruments home on loan to practice. Parents will be required to complete a loan agreement form and return it to the office before your child takes the instrument. These forms will be sent out on Friday.

New Cycling Proficiency Course Starts

Yesterday afternoon saw a new group of children start their cycling proficiency course.

We are very grateful to Mr Byer, Mr Mulrenhan and Mr Stanbrook for giving up their free time to run this important course for our children.

The first session covered important safety and cycle care issues. They also started to look at the basics of safe cycling.

Wasps Nest is amazing

Tamzin (in year 6) brought in this huge wasps nest. It was found in the loft a a house her Dad was working on.

The close up photo below shows a small part of this incredible structure. The perfect hexagons fit together beautifully to form a strong bond. Wasps lay their eggs in each of the hexagons.

The whole nest is made from very thin strips of wood which the wasps get from trees, fences or sheds around our houses or gardens.

It really shows the wonder of nature and that wasps must be brilliant at maths!

Framlingham Flyers Running Club

There is a growing number of our children and ex-pupils who belong to a great local sports club.

A group of them recently visited the athlectics club in Ipswich.

Framlingham Flyers is a small running club with keen and friendly members who all share the love for running.

We meet regularly throughout the week, Monday being our structured training session, Wednesday our tempo running session and at the weekends we enjoy long runs into the countryside.
Based in Framlingham, Suffolk the club has regularly entered teams for local races and even have individuals running international events, anything from 5k to Marathons.

NEW TERM
KS1 and KS2 enjoyed a lovely Church Service on Friday when Revd Graham Owen welcomed the children back for the new school year. He also touched on our 2 main themes this year: “Challenge for All” and “Independence – Ready for the Future”. Throughout this year there will be opportunities for you to be involved in our 2 themes – Revd Owen was very keen to emphasise that children must never be worried to ask for help and must always strive to do their best.

ACTIVITIES FOR ALL
We are pleased that further ‘Activities for All’ funding has been made available to the school this year. The fund, part of a Government initiative, helps support children and young people to attend more activities that take place outside of normal school hours by contributing to activity costs, focusing on those children who are disadvantaged by economic circumstances. The fund can also be used to provide opportunities for children who are young carers, for those who do not have English as their first language or who are experiencing challenging times in their lives.
If you feel that you would like your child to be considered for this funding, please get a form from the school office and return by Friday 23 September. Our allocated amount may not be enough to meet all requests, but all applications will be considered when allocating the fund.

This is the first ladies only charity bike ride in Suffolk with a 17 mile ride starting at the Castle Inn Framlingham. Welcome Back to everyone for a new school year. A special welcome also to all our new starters in Nursery, Reception and further up the school.

Along with this letter of general information please also find a Diary Dates leaflet which gives details of dates for this term and beyond.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CHANGES TO ARRANGEMENTS
From Monday 12 September school will be unlocked at 8.30am to allow for children to take their bags to the cloakrooms. At 8.45am (on the ring of the bell) all children and parents will be asked to exit the school to allow for the children to meet their teachers who will be waiting for them on the playground. The teachers will organise their class line and each class will walk in to school prepared and ready for learning. We would ask that parents do not stand with their children in their lines but allow them to independently line up with their peers. Reception children should line up within the fenced area just outside their class door.
After school ALL class teachers will bring their classes onto the playground to meet their families. Any children not collected will then return to their class teacher who will take them to the front office. We would ask that if you are meeting your child you stand away from the walkways to allow for the school to empty as swiftly as possible.
If you allow your child to walk home we require you to sign the attached slip and return it to the office please, else we will be unable to let your child leave school.
Please advise the class teacher of any changes to collection arrangements in writing.

DINNER MONEY
Please can we remind all parents that dinner money needs to be brought in on a MONDAY for the week. If you do not pay on a Monday, you will need to provide a packed lunch for your child that week. Payments can also be made half termly, ‘pre-pay’ forms will be sent to those who normally pay this way – if you would like to start paying half termly, please pop into the office to get a form. Thank you.

CHEQUES
All cheques that come into the school should be made payable to

apart from school lunches (paid to Suffolk County Council (SCC)) and photos.

HOLIDAY REQUESTS
The school’s policy regarding absence requests for holidays is that they should be taken during school breaks NOT during term time. Applications to take your child out of school during term time will be considered for exceptional circumstances only. Authorisation may be given only at the discretion of the Head teacher. Applications will not be considered unless they are received at least THREE WEEKS prior on a Leave of Absence form with a full written explanation as to why you are asking for absence during term time.

SCHOOL LETTERS BY EMAIL ......
WE WOULD REALLY LIKE TO INCREASE THE TAKE UP OF THIS.
Many parents now receive their school letters by email; if you would like to register please email us on admin@hitchams.suffolk.sch.uk. We are endeavouring not to produce a ‘hard’ copy to those households that receive letters by email, so please ensure your child is aware they do not need to receive a paper copy.
Those who are already registered do not need to re-register.

ARE YOU A MUSICAL PARENT? …we need your help….
With Mrs Armstrong and Miss Ashberry taking on the new school Orchestra that we hope to get up and running later this month, it means we are short of teachers for the Thursday afterschool Recorder club (3.05-4.00pm).
If you are a musician who is willing to teach one of our recorder groups we would love to hear from you.

FRIENDS QUIZ NIGHT & AGM – Friday 23 September
The Friends AGM will be held in the interval of the Quiz Night. It is an opportunity for the Friends to let parents know how the fundraising has gone this year and what the school has used the money for. It is also when the committee would like to welcome new members to join them. NURSERY SPACES
We still have spaces available in our School Nursery this term. If you have a child born BEFORE 31 August 2008, or have friends with children of this age, do please come to the school office to get a Nursery brochure, application form and arrange a time to look around the Nursery.

Allergy Letter

Dear Parents

We have 3 children at school who are extremely sensitive and allergic to NUTS. EVEN IF THEY ARE TOUCHED BY SOMEONE WHO HAS HANDLED NUTS OR PRODUCTS CONTAINING TRACES OF NUTS it could bring on anaphylactic shock which can be life threatening.

WE ASK PARENTS TO BE VIGILANT PLEASE AND CHECK THAT THEIR CHILDREN’S LUNCH BOX CONTENTS DO NOT HAVE ITEMS CONTAINING NUTS OR NUT PRODUCTS for example:

Peanut butter, Nutella, some cereal bars, and any product that says ‘May contain traces of nuts’ or nut oils or nut essences.

Similarly, if you bring snacks to the playground at the end of the day for children to eat before going home please can I ask that you are VERY CAREFUL that they do not contain nuts or traces of nuts and that leftovers are not abandoned on the playground.

We cannot stress how important this is.
Your help and co-operation is much appreciated.

Improvements over the holiday

During the school holidays both playgrounds have been finished off with new markings. There are netball courts and various patterns to explore.

We also have a brand new school hall floor.

Miss Hitchcock becomes Mrs Armstrong

On a fabulous day in the school holidays Miss Hitchcock became Mrs Armstrong in a service attended by over 400 people at the Colchester Road Baptist Church in Ipswich.

Lots of smartly dressed staff from Robert Hitchams were there to celebrate the occasion.

Leavers Service

Our Year 6 children put on a fantastic display of talent in an emotional service at St. Michael's Church, Framlingham yesterday afternoon.

There was poetry, creative writing, art work and music.

Every child received an award from the school and a gift from the church.

In a spectacular finale the children sang 'Happy ever afters' from their recent school play.

Alfie Demmon Guitar Solo

A Headteacher’s Reflections on Two Terms at Sir Robert Hitcham’s CEVAP School

As the first two terms of my Headship at Sir Robert Hitcham’s CEVAP School draws to a close, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the recent past. So much has happened in a short space of time that it is difficult to reconcile that I haven’t been your Headteacher for a year yet! I have been made to feel so welcome by the children, staff, governors and families of the school and also by the churches in the town and the local community.

I have been spending the time since my appointment familiarising myself with our wonderful school, recognising the excellence, and planning for the future. There have been some changes which you may have seen/experienced, for example, the new reporting formats which have been well received by the vast majority of families, the change in the newsletter format and the change of seating arrangements in the hall. There has been much discussion with staff about learning and behaviour which has led to an amended Behaviour Policy which we hope to be able to publish in September. Finally the Governors and I, amongst many other things, have been working with Suffolk County Council to solve the issue of the Crossing Patrol which hopefully we will have in place for September, if there are applicants for the position.

The parent questionnaire responses (from Reception, Year 2, 4 & 6) have been extremely useful in the future planning for the school and we are very grateful for the time taken by families to share their thoughts. Many of your responses have already been shared with staff and to that end some of the changes which have occurred already have been initiated through your involvement.

During the past two terms I have been pleased to meet so many families and to get to know your children, who are wonderful. They have really helped me to settle in to our school.

I do hope that you have a lovely summer break.

End of Year Films

Mr Brook has put together a series of films covering the last year in school.

They are mainly about our leaving year 6 children but there are some images which the rest of the school will find interesting.

It has been an eventful year with two lots of snow in the Autumn Term, the Gas emergency in the Spring, lots of sport, a school production and the Royal Wedding Day. Each film has some music from the last 12 months which I hope you will enjoy.

Whitwell 2011 - Year 6 Camp Highlights

The children and staff from year 6 enjoyed a brilliant week of camping and activities in North Norfolk.

As you can see from the photos, the children took part in a wide range of artistic, adventurous and wildlife activities.

It was a pleasure to spend a week with these children. They got on with each other so well and willingly helped out with all of the hard work required on a camping trip. The staff have never seen a group with so much energy. A huge thanks goes to our 3 young helpers (Amy Brook, Emma Sayer and Laura Revell), the teachers (Mrs Morgan, Mr Vaughan, Mr Brook, Mr Byer and Mrs Monk) and especially to Mr Harte for cooking our food throughout the week.

LEAVERS’ SERVICE – THURSDAY 21 JULY 1.30pm
The Leavers’ Service will be held at St Michael’s Church on Thursday 21 July at 1.30pm. Parents are warmly welcomed to this event. Pupils in classes DB/GM, RV, NS/JB and GH will attend with any younger siblings of Year 6 children who are in other classes.

YEAR 6 LEAVERS’ COLLECTION
We would like to thank the parents of Year 6 leavers who have kindly contributed to this collection, and are delighted to let you know that we have raised enough to buy a picnic bench that will be sited on the back playground, bearing a plaque from the 2011 Leavers.

SURF SPECIAL LUNCH – Friday 22 July
SCC Catering have arranged a special lunch this Friday of Fish Surprise or Cheese and Leek Bake, Chips, Baked Beans, Sweetcorn, followed by a Raspberry Ripple Tub dessert.

END OF TERM CAKE STALL – Friday 22 July 3pm
Classes PLDD & PSKM will be baking for this cake stall on Friday in the Playground on behalf of the Friends. Please remember to bring in some pocket money to buy an end of term sweet treat!

BAG SIZES FOR SCHOOL
If you are purchasing a new school bag for your child in the holidays, please can we ask that you buy as small a bag as is suitable, as we are so restricted for corridor space.

GUITAR TUITION – Spaces Available
In September there are still some spaces for Guitar lessons. If your child may be interested please collect a form from the office. Costs are £42 per term currently.

MRS SPENCER’S NEWS
We are delighted to let you all know that Mrs Spencer is expecting her second child. The baby is due in November so Mrs Spencer will go on maternity leave around October half term.

CROSSING PATROL VACANCY
Please pass information onto ANYONE you know who may be interested:
Patrol operating times: 08:25 to 09:00am and 15:00 to 15:25pm plus a ‘lighting’ allowance of 1 hour 20 minutes per week. Total of 6 hours 40 minutes per week at £6.29 per hour.
Monday to Friday of each week in term time only. Post is subject to half pay retainer.
Post can operate as a job share. Post is subject to enhanced CRB check and medical review. Full training and support will be given to the post holder.

Mills Win Sports Day

Mills won the key stage 2 sports day - retaining the trophy from last year.

Team catains Georgina and Edward can be seen above with chair of governors Graham Owen.

There was some outstanding races this year which demonstrated the sporting talent in the school at the moment.

Creative Writing Competition Winners

Mr Rob Mawson (school governor) came in to present the prizes to our competition winners.

Rob (who is a professional writer known as Robert Rasdcliffe) read all of the entries and spoke about the quality of writing he had seen.

Children from key stage 1 had a lovely walk around Framlingham looking at the pictures in the variuos shop windows. It was a thrill for some of them to see their own pictures on display.

Cricket Team Finish 3rd in East of England

Our school cricket team (pictured above with Mr Devon Malcolm - former England fast bowler) finished very close to qualification for National Finals.

After winning all of their group games in the morning vs teams from Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and a team from Essex the boys qualified for the knockout stages in the afternoon.

Framlingham won a very tense and exciting quarter final but then were unlucky in the draw for the semin finals to be paired with the champions of Essex.

The boys were nervous in the game because they knew that the winners would get to the Nationals.

Fram bowled first and got off to a poor start. Essex had some very powerful batters early on. However, Fram hit back to take several late wickets and keep their score down.

The Essex boys also had some good bowlers and despite getting off to a good start Fram finished 12 runs short of victory.

The team were very disappointed to finally lose a match (after 16 straight wins this season) and frustrated to hear that the runners up from our group in the morning (from Norfolk) had made it through to the final (and guaranteed entry to the Nationals). However, as the watching Suffolk cricket manager said to the boys: they should be proud of the way they had represented their school and the county of Suffolk.

150 Suffolk schools had entered this years competition and over 1000 schools in the East. So finishing 3rd was a great achievement.

The boys have had a brilliant season and become a close group of friends through their exploits. It has been a pleasure to coach them and watch them play. I would also like to thank Mr James Cantrell for his help throughout the summer.

SPORTS DAY REMINDER – TUESDAY 5 JULY
Foundation and Key Stage 1 9.30 - 10.30am / Key Stage 2 10.30 - 11.30am.
If the weather should be inclement, the reserve day is Wednesday 6 July at the same times.
Please ensure that your child has their PE kit (KS2 House tee-shirt) and a water bottle.
A sun hat and sun cream are advisable. Children are allowed to wear trainers.
If you are able to volunteer help at Sports day please see Mrs Spencer.

SHARE SESSIONS REMINDER – DB/GM – TUES 5 JULY and RV - WEDS 6 JULY
Just to remind Year 6 parents that the Share Session this week start at 1.20pm.

VIOLIN ASSEMBLY – Wednesday 6 July 2.30pm
We would like to invite any interested parents (of children who will be in Year 3-6 in September) to this assembly when music teachers and students from the High School will be introducing pupils to the Violin and Viola. They wish to promote the string instrument lessons that we hope to be offering here from September. Please come along if you would like your child to have these lessons and want to hear more.

REPORTS OUT ON FRIDAY
Pupils in Year 1-6 will be given their reports this Friday, please can we ask you to remind your children that the reports are addressed to the parents and should not be opened until they are handed over to you. If you feel that you would like to speak to your child’s teacher about the report, please arrange this directly with the teacher next week.

CINDERELLA AND ROCKERFELLA
The upper KS2 performances last week at the Headmaster Porter theatre were a huge success; the audiences and cast thoroughly enjoyed the shows. Congratulations must go to all the performers and many thanks to all the teachers and parents who put in so much work to make this the success it was.
Mr Brook is making copies of the photos on CDs and also some video clips on DVDs, which will be for sale: Photo CDs will be £2, DVDs will be £3. Order forms are being given out to UKS2 separately. Proceeds (after costs) will go to the Friends. Please note photos should not be put onto any internet sites, unless they are of your child ONLY.
The collection at the end of the shows raised £369 part of which will cover costs of costumes etc, the balance of the proceeds will go to our nominated charity EACH.

FRIEND’S FUNDRAISING
The Friends are delighted to let you know that the raffles at the productions raised £255.80.
The Bags2School collection held in June, raised £220 towards Friends funds.
