More interesting Suffolk photos

These photos were taken by Mr Byer. Above is the fantastic village sign in Capel St Andrew and below is a strange piece of wood on the beach at Covehithe (near Southwold). What do you think it looks like?
Do you have any strange or interesting photos from around Suffolk?

INTERNET SAFETY TRAINING FOR PARENTS

On Wednesday 6 April, we will be holding a special training evening for parents, from 7pm – 8.30pm, this is a repeat of the afternoon session held last November.

Following the huge rise in the use of the internet and ‘social networking’ sites we felt it would be useful to parents to understand more about them. We hope to help you identify the issues surrounding these sites for both you and your children.

We have arranged for the training team within SCC Safeguarding in Education to run this training. The overall event will be around keeping children safe on the internet and social networking sites. The training will cover ‘Facebook’ and Social Networking sites, what they are, the benefits of them and the not so good elements. They will also cover good and bad profile content and privacy settings.

If you are interested in attending this training please complete and return the slip below as soon as possible. Places are limited to 20 from this school, as the training is also being offered to staff from local schools.

REPORT FEEDBACK
We are very grateful to all those families who responded to the reporting trial for the Spring term. Your comments have been very honest and therefore invaluable in our endeavours to make reporting to families more accessible and useful to children’s learning. These have now been collated and in due course will be shared with the Governors. There was an overwhelming support for the new format with 92% of the responses being in favour of it. As this format appears successful in the main, we will use this for the next academic year for the Autumn and Spring reports. The remaining 8% of the comments will be debated by staff as we formulate the Summer Term report format. Thank-you

PARENT CONSULTATIONS – Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 March
The parent consultations which are taking place on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 March will follow a similar format to previous meetings. The appointments will take place in the hall. The children’s work will be ready for you to collect in their classrooms. Do take time to look through their work before your appointment. A waiting area will be created in the middle of the hall which will create a confidential atmosphere. May I finally remind you that this is a ‘Grown ups’ only appointment. I look forward to meeting many of you this week.
Due to the staff being involved in Parent Consultations there will be NO Hockey, Football or Reading Club on Tuesday, and NO Maypole on Wednesday BUT HOLY HORRORS WILL BE ON AS USUAL.

UPDATE ON CROSSING PATROL
I had a meeting last week with Mr Hart the County Councillor and Mr Mottram the Highways Road Safety Manager to further discuss the future of the crossing patrol outside our school. Both gentlemen were extremely impressed with the petitions and individual letters sent to the County Council by children and parents from our school. Although we were not able to save the funding for our crossing patrol from the County Council, an opportunity has been created for a dialogue to occur between the Council, Highways and the school. Over the next few weeks we will be meeting to discuss the options for some form of crossing patrol for the Summer Term and indeed beyond. Issues to resolve are funding, recruitment, training, insurance etc. We will keep you informed of any progress and in the meantime would like to thank all those considerate drivers who slow down at the Vyces Road junction to give children and parents time to cross College Road safely.

RED NOSE DAY – Reminder
We are selling Red Noses at the office for £1.00 until Wednesday 16 March. Wear them on Friday!

NURSERY PLAY AND CHAT MORNINGS - Monday 4 and Wednesday 6 April
On 4 and 6 April parents are welcome to come into Nursery to chat to Mrs Stephenson or Mrs Eyles and look at their child’s learning journey, and to play with their child. Please stay for as long as you wish between 9.30-11.30am

FRIENDS FAMILY FILM NIGHT
Friday’s showing of ‘Alpha and Omega’ was a great success, raising about £270. The Friends wish to thank the children and parents for their support, there has been some great feedback, and they hope to run another one in May.

ROAD WORKS
We have been told Mount Pleasant will have traffic lights from 16 – 25 March, so you may need to allow extra time for your journey to and from school.

OLD WELLIES!
If you have any old wellies sizes 11, 12 & 1 the reception classes would really like to have them. Thank you.

CUT YOUR BILLS
Suffolk Coastal District Council would like families to be aware that they may be entitled to Housing or Council Tax benefits. As long as you have less than £16,000 in savings you may qualify, even if you are working, for example a couple with two children earning £440 per week may qualify. They suggest you visit http://www.suffolkcoastal.gov.uk/yourhome/benefits/default.htm, ring 01394 444838 or visit the Council Offices at Melton Hill, Woodbridge.

SUFFOLK COASTAL YOUNG PEOPLES’ PROJECT
This group runs a Saturday club once a month on the fourth Saturday and a summer play-scheme. They are based in Saxmundham and cater for children aged 7-13 years old who have disabilities/additional needs. They do a variety of crafts, activities, play on the Wii and get outside as much as possible. For more information contact Maria on 01728 747938 (evenings).

Spirituality Workshop

The children who worked on this project were chosen from across the school from the Nursery to Year 6. They worked in family groupings of 4 or 5 children to each sculpture. They had an introductory session at school and then spent the whole of the next day at St. Michael's Church in Framlingham working on the project. They came in old clothes, with a packed lunch and were ready for action from the word go.
The 24 children were chosen from mixed cultural and religious backgrounds and they all supported each other. They even ate their packed lunches together in the church.
The sculptures were based on 6 characters from the Easter story. The children discussed their characters and their emotions. The sculptures (created from scrap materials) were made to depict their chosen character.

Some quotes from the children:
"It was quite imaginative because we had to dream up all the ideas of what they would look like". Kasper
"It was exciting. I liked pasting the best because we were on the final stage and not sure what it would look like." Alex
"I would like to do another one and another one. It was such fun." Ben
"It was exhausting". Emma
"I made some new friends." Anvika
"It was good doing it in church because there's loads of space and the story comes from the Bible, and the Bible is read in church." Freddie

On Friday 25th March the sculptures are being taken to the Cathedral in Bury St. Edmunds for display over the Easter period.
Watch this video below to see all of the finished sculptures of Mary Magdalene, Joseph of Arimethea, Judas, a Soldier, Pontuis Pilate and Mary Mother of Jesus.

Textile Pictures by Class RV

These stunning pictures were created by children in class RV. Each one is based on a famous work of art. Molly's superb picture, for example, is inspired by Van Gogh's Sunflowers painting - see below.
Do you recognise the artist who inspired this soup can?

Unusual Images Around Suffolk

I really like walking in the Suffolk countryside and always take a camera with me. During half term I saw some unusual sites such as an island in a lake (near Shingle Street) which looks like a map of Britain.
This sculpture of a bicycle is in a field between Framlingham and Badingham.
This amazing piece of 'art work' has been made in the shingle near Bawdsey. Some one has made a line of white stones and shells which winds its way from their beach house down to the water.
If any body has photos of unusual or strange sites around Suffolk then please give a copy to Mr Brook. Perhaps they could go on our Blog.

BRING YOUR MUM TO LUNCH
ON THURSDAY 31 MARCH, MONDAY 4 OR THURSDAY 7 APRIL

We would like to invite mums to come and experience a school lunch with their children on Thursday 31 March, Monday 4 April or Thursday 7 April.

We ask that you attend on 1 day only; if you have more than one child here you can all eat together.

The costs of school lunches are £3.17 for an adult (£2.10 for a child).

Our cooks strive to make all the food appetizing and at the same time to produce a healthy meal. To achieve this, they oven bake food whenever possible, make their own bread and rolls, and use fresh vegetables in season. Fresh salads are on the menu every day. They also use the humble potato, not instant mash, and there are at least two vegetable options on every day. Fried and pre-processed foods are kept to a minimum and chips are only on the menu once a week, the meals are appealing, balanced and healthy. Mrs Chapman, our cook, makes great efforts to cook new and imaginative dishes. On the reverse of this letter is a menu for the 3 days for your information.

Please fill in the reply slip below and return it to the office with the money FOR THE ADULT MEALS ONLY by Thursday 17 March AT THE LATEST. Sadly, we are NOT able to accept any late requests as the ingredients have to be ordered in advance. Children should bring in their money as usual on Monday 28 March or Monday 4 April for lunch arrangements for those weeks.

Please also state if you require a VEGETARIAN option.

We would ask mums to sign in outside the hall and wait in this area for their child/ren to collect them at 12.05pm and take them into lunch. Could we remind you that unfortunately you will not be able to park in the school car park due to lack of space. We would ask that mums do not stay after you have eaten lunch. At this time the children will go to their playground for play and we ask that you leave but please do not forget to sign out.
We would also welcome your feedback on the forms outside the hall when you have finished. Bon appetit!

New playground surface

As you will have probably noticed, we have a new front playground surface. This was done amazingly during the half term holiday. Some new drainage was put under our back playground. This has solved a long standing problem. The plan is to resurface the whole of this playground soon. Over half term 6 classrooms also had new carpets fitted.

Roman Dance by Class EM

In Class EM we had to make up a Roman dance. It had to include marching, turning, fighting and defending.

We got told that it mustn’t be just 5 minutes of play fighting. You must not make any sound with your feet or hands.

Our favourite bit was the ending. You can watch some videos below.

By Eddie Baker and Zac Brady.

ELECTION OF PARENT GOVERNOR

Due to the term of office coming to an end for one of the current Governing Body, there is one place for a Parent Governor available for election to the Governing Body. I am therefore writing to give you details of the arrangements for nominations and voting for new Parent Governors.

Mrs Mary Whiteley has served as the Parent Governor on the Governing Body of the school since May 2007. Mrs Whiteley’s term of office ends in April, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Whiteley for all her hard work and commitment over the last four years.

We have one vacancy to take office from 1 May 2011. Enclosed with this letter is a nomination form on which four parents who have children at the school can jointly nominate another parent for election as a Parent Governor. No parent may nominate more candidates than there are vacancies. It is necessary for a parent Governor to have a child at the school at the time he or she is elected. Certain people are disqualified from being Governors and these are described on the back of the nomination form.
Completed nomination forms must be returned to school by Monday 14 March 2011.

There is space on the nomination form for a statement of not more than 50 words by the person nominated in which they can give such details as they wish about themselves and their views. This statement would then be included on the voting paper which will then be circulated to all parents.

The term of office is for four years whether or not the child of the elected parent remains at the school for the whole of this period. A Parent Governor elected now will hold office until 31 April 2015 and, like other Governors, will be eligible for re-election.

The Suffolk Education Committee would like parents to play as full a part as possible in your children’s education and, therefore, it is hoped that you will use your vote in this election.

Yours sincerely

Revd G Owen
Chair of Governors
