SRH Music Ark Grand Opening

What a wonderful showcase from our talented singers & musicians tonight at the Grand Opening of our wonderful new Music Ark!

We've taken lots of photos & videos which we hope to post on the website gallery soon.

Meanwhile here is a little bit about the Music Ark and a few pictures from inside.

How will the Ark be used?

The benefits of music on heart, soul and mind are well known, it is an aid to mental wellbeing and proven to help with memory, focus and cognitive functions.

Armed with this knowledge and a love for music at the heart of our school, the SRH Music Ark provides a beautiful and dedicated physical space for all our children across the entire school.

Children from Nursery up to Year 6 will  access the music curriculum, individual instrumental music tuition, extra-curricular music activities and lunchtime wellbeing music clubs.

With a special emphasis on inclusivity everyone will feel welcome to enjoy, participate and create music at any level.

Apart from our wonderful Class Teachers delivering curricular music, we are fortunate to have an incredible team of visiting musicians to inspire and provide tuition to our pupils, funding for which is part-provided by the Sing Praise, GeeWizz and Phoenix Singers charities.

Throughout the year each class receives music lessons with Catherine Johnson, who also leads weekly Singing Assemblies, enthusing children with her expertise and love of music.

We also have several professional peripatetic instrument teachers providing group and individual tuition.  Violinists are taught by Cal Fell, Andy Bold provides Drumming tuition, Megan Peel leads our famous Firebirds singers, all Year 3 pupils receive Clarinet tuition from Martin Kershaw via County Music Service, who also provide Guitar tuition under Kevin Butcher.

In addition, this year saw the school participate in The Big Sing and A Celebration of Schools’ Music at Snape, Young Voices at The O2 Arena in London, Carol Singing on Framlingham’s Market Hill, singing workshops with Group A, Bassistry Arts Drum & Bass workshops kindly funded by the Friends Association.

MUDDY MONDAY

The Reception classes have Muddy Mondays every week. All through out the year we have enjoyed Forest School sessions at Robin Wood every Monday morning. This week we spent the whole day taking part in activities based around the story 'Where the Wild Things Are' by Maurice Sendak. We made and played with boats using bark, we drew maps and we made mud faces inspired by the Wild things. We also cooked lunch on an open fire which was a real feast. We had cheesy mash, hot dogs and beans. Mrs Aldred made us some yummy biscuits too. Mrs Waddell also cooked popcorn for us which was really exciting.

Class LH learning about trust!!

As part of our RE, we were finding out “Why Christians trust Jesus and follow him?”.

We used various scenarios to learn to trust each other.  In pairs, one person had their eyes closed and their partner led them around the playground giving clear instructions.  We found this a bit tricky - it was easier when our partner held our arms to guide us but we learnt how to trust each other and listen carefully to instruction in order to stay safe.

We have discussed many bible stories that showed how people trusted Jesus; Jesus heals a paralysed man; Jesus commands a storm to stop; Jesus feeds 5000; Jesus heals blind Bartimaeus and Jesus heals Jarius’ daughter.  We used role play to act these stories out emphasising the trust that Jesus showed.

We shared the story of Zacchaeus and recreated the moment when Jesus spoke to him in the tree asking him to come down and showing the trust that he in Jesus.  We made moving models of Zacchaeus up the tree and moved him down once Jesus had spoken to him.

FOREST SCHOOL-CLASS LC

The children from Class LC had another busy morning. We discussed the Summer solstice and  made some beautiful hanging sunshine's by weaving wool around a willow frame. The children  also enjoyed experimenting with charcoal to make their own paint, they then painted symbols and pictures on trees like they might have done in caves in the stone age.

Tennis Tournament

Three teams of children from across Year 4, 5 and 6 represented the school at a Tennis tournament today.

The children were split into 3 teams, Yr4 , Year 5/6 A team and a Year5/6 B team, competing in individual matches but earning points for their respective teams.

The event was well attended with over 10 teams competing in each age group.  The children performed amazingly and showed great skill and sportsmanship in all their games - they should be very proud of themselves.

The Year 4 team achieved second place (silver medal), the Year 5/6 A  Team achieved second place (silver medal) and the Year 5/6 B team achieved a 4th place.

A huge congratulations to all of the children.

Budding chefs in Class LH!!

Class LH have enjoyed a whole day of sandwich making  …. yes…  a whole day to make one sandwich but we have learnt lots of new skills and found about healthy eating along the way, discovering about balanced diets, different food groups and making good choices about how to eat healthily.

We started off by trying different types of breads (pitta, wholemeal, white, bagel, sourdough and brioche) to find out which bread we wanted to make our own sandwich from.  After that, we sliced cucumbers, radishes and tomatoes, we peeled and grated some carrots and chopped lettuce.  We also tried sweetcorn which created a lovely rainbow plate.  From these salad ingredients, we then chose our own salad to go in our sandwich.   Finally, we peeled and chopped eggs, sliced some ham and then also taste-tested tuna, cheese and houmous.

Once we had chosen the ingredients for the sandwich, we actually made our own sandwiches after lunch and sampled them.

It was good to learn new skills such as the arch and claw method to hold the food safely which we were cutting; knowing how to use knives safely; understanding how different foods are good for making healthy choices for sandwiches.

Well done to everyone in the class who sampled every food – some were a bit reluctant but still gave it a go.  There were some amazing sandwiches created combining different ingredients.
