Fairtrade goes bananas!!

Steph Bennell from Fairtrade visited Class MBu to help the children find out about the Fairtrade charity.  During the session, the children discovered what Fairtrade means and how it helps farmers receive a fair price for their hard work, supporting their families and communities. Through an interactive quiz and discussions, the children learnt about bananas and other Fairtrade products and learnt where they come from.   Steph also shared some surprising facts about bananas, including how the inside of a banana skin can be used to polish and clean leather shoes naturally!! The visit was both enjoyable and informative, helping the children understand the importance of making responsible choices and supporting Fairtrade farmers around the world.

Steph also shared that as it is Fairtrade fortnight, Framlingham library are hosting a banana trail for all children.  Please do pop in to find out more at the library. Thank you, Steph, for such an interesting and inspiring visit.

Gold Award for the JRSO's!

Last Friday our four 'Junior Road Safety Officer's' in Year 5 went to Endeavour House in Ipswich for an  awards ceremony. Many other schools in Suffolk attended and the panel consisted of members of the council involved with road and safety management. I am very pleased to say, they were award the highest award 'Gold' for all the hard work they have been doing in the past year to promote road safety in our school. Well done JRSO's, well deserved.

Comparing Biomes: Desert vs Rainforest

This week in Year 5, the children explored biomes by researching from books, gathering key facts about climate, animals, and plant life. Each child chose either the desert or the rainforest, which meant the class could compare two very different environments. They worked brilliantly to collate their information and showed great curiosity as they learned how living things adapt to survive in each biome.

🗺️ Coordinates and Scale: Putting Ourselves on the Map.

This week in Geography, Class JA have been learning how to read coordinates and understand scale on maps.

We started by looking at an Ordnance Survey map of our local area. We practised using the key to find landmarks. Then we compared it with a map of our school and the local area, which shows buildings, playgrounds, and landmarks in more detail.

KS1 Trip to Jimmy's Farm

On Friday KS1 enjoyed a visit to Jimmy’s Farm. On a wet arrival, we were met by our Rangers, who talked to us about various habitats and animals throughout the farm. As it brightened up, we were able to explore the farm and all it had to offer. We had a lovely picnic in the sunshine before discovering the rest of the surroundings. We looked closely at the plants in each habitat which provided links to our current topic ‘Scented Garden’. The children particularly enjoyed seeing the brown bears and polar bears, as well as walking through the butterfly house. Thank you to all the helpers that made this day possible!

KS2 Rocks, Relics and Rumbles WOW! Day

Yesterday, the KS2 children had an exciting Wow! Day to launch our new topic, Rocks, Relics, and Rumbles.

The day was filled with a variety of hands-on activities designed to engage the children and spark their curiosity. Activities included creating volcanic art, designing a collaborative art piece using recycled materials, making ‘chatterboxes’, conducting mini explosions, and building a diagram of the ‘Layers of the Earth’.

The children moved through a carousel of activities, working in teams to complete each task. Their enthusiasm, teamwork, and perseverance were outstanding as they collaborated, problem-solved, and expressed their creativity.

It was wonderful to see them fully immersed in the topic, applying both their practical and critical thinking skills to each new challenge.

This Wow Day set the stage for an exciting and engaging term ahead, and we look forward to seeing how the children continue to explore and develop their understanding of rocks, relics, and natural phenomena throughout the topic.

Class KV tour of Europe

As part of European Languages Day, Class KV set off on a tour of Europe.  We visited  6 European countries:- Finland, Spain, Italy, Ukraine, Greece and France.  As geographers, we found out about their culture, listened to the national anthems, looked at their flags and talked about the length of a typical school day and the age that they start.  We examined a typical menu from their country and then sampled some of the typical foods from these countries.  The beetroot borscht from Ukraine was not popular but the Greek yoghurt went down very well!  Lots of children tried new foods which was great and there were lots of comments about the texture, the bitterness and the sweetness.

The children then voted for the country that they would like to live in!! The favourite country was Greece – due to the fact that they only went to school for either the morning (8.15am – 1.30pm) or the afternoon  (2.00 – 7.00pm) and they loved the Greek yoghurt with blueberries!

Africa Alive

Nursery, Reception and Key Stage 1 had a fabulous day out at Africa Alive yesterday! Everyone loved their coach journey to and from Kessingland. As there has to be, there was a lot of singing in each bus -  all the way there and all the way back again...

Once there, everyone loved seeing all of the animals, eating picnics and just being together in a beautiful setting on a sunny day. It was a wonderful day.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this day possible and to all of our wonderful volunteers who were able to accompany us on this trip. We are sorry we couldn't take everyone with us.

Today we have been hearing all about the children's favourite memories of the day and enjoying some of their Africa Alive inspired artwork and writing.

Snapshot of learning in VW

Snapshot of learning in VW

Class VW have come back to school with a fantastic work- ethic. Here are some of the things we've been getting up to in class:

Topic

KS2 have commenced a new topic, Gods and Mortals. With this, we used the computers to complete a comparative study of the human and physical geography of Greece and the UK. They compared aspects such as climate, active volcanoes, mountains, etc.

English

As the class get closer to the statutory SATs tests in May, we've been looking at how we carefully structure 3-mark questions on 'impressions', making sure we collect suitable evidence from the text to help us with this.

Maths

We've been investigating shape and the sum of interior angles in polygons such as pentagons, hexagons, etc. the children have been successfully 'splitting' these shapes into triangles and using this information to assist them.
