Chrissie Sains - author visit

As part of our new literacy curriculum with "Literacy Tree", we have been lucky to enjoy a range of books this year and also welcome some great authors and today, was no exception, where we have had a very inspirational and uplifting day with Chrissie Sains, the author of such books as ‘Alien in the Jam factory’,  ‘Slugs in Jam’ and others.  The children heard about Chrissie's first attempt at writing, which she shared and was proud of as it went on the classroom wall!!  She spoke honestly and openly about her struggles with writing as a child.  She also shared that “Alien in the jam factory” was inspired by her god-daughter who had Downs Syndrome and so she helped Chrissie write this first novel.

After this introduction, year 3 and year 4  were invited to create their own ‘creature’ using a variety of ideas from her “Treasure chest of ideas”.  See the picture below which the children helped to draw and was designed by voting for each part from a choice of features.  Reception and nursery enjoyed singing a song all about strawberry, banana, orange and apple jam with actions.  Year 1 and year 2 designed their own jam:- “Strawberry jam with chocolate sprinkles, pink icing and flying dust” all voted for by the children from certain features. They then each designed their own jam.   Year 5 and year 6 – see separate blog post.

Some of the comments from the children:- “she was so good – I’m going to go home and write my own story”; “I loved listening to her and loved the magic that came out of treasure box”; "I loved designing my own beast” and “It was so good – I can’t wait to start drawing”.  Some of the teachers were also in awe of her inspirational box of ideas!  It was such a lovely day.

Nursery Application forms can be downloaded here for 2025/26 or pop into the office to collect a printed form.

Applications for April 2026 should be returned to the school office by Wednesday 21 January 2026, please, for us to allocate places in accordance with our Nursery Admissions Policy.  

Our Nursery can take children from the beginning of the term following their third birthday.   Children may have up to five terms of free part-time early learning with us before they join the Reception class.  In addition, we have a chargeable lunch club that runs until 1.30pm. Nursery children may have a school dinner or bring a packed lunch.

Our Nursery can take children from the beginning of the term following their third birthday.   Children may have up to five terms of free part-time early learning with us before they join the Reception class.  The Nursery aims to create an environment where children can have a variety of experiences through play.  This means we can develop their knowledge and understanding of the world around them and give them a strong foundation upon which we can start to build the curriculum.

Wonderful Nativity Week

What a delight we have had all week, with every Foundation & Key Stage 1 class performing their individual Nativities, not just once but twice! Each afternoon we have had the dress rehearsals to the other children and then each morning the parents & grandparents have come along to watch.

Nursery's Hitcham's Hundreds

On Monday, Nursery completed their challenge to create as many models as we could using 100 lego bricks each time for the Hitcham's Hundreds. The children all came up with some wonderful models together and worked as a team. We had castles, pizza and even a dinosaur. Thank you so much for your sponsorship and well done nursery! 

Harvest assemblies

We celebrated our harvest festival at St Michaels' s Church.  Every class contributed by sharing either a poem, a song or facts about the Waveney food bank.  Many of the classes focused particularly on sharing - a message which Reverend Chris reinforced in his blessing.  Our donations were being shared with local families through the Waveney Food Bank.  Matthew shared some interesting facts and information about the charity at both Key Stage services.  The worship team shared prayers about Harvest.   Nursery and Reception children held their special assembly at school. 

The worship team helped load up the van with not only our school donations but also the donations from the service at St Michael's Church last Sunday. 

Thank you to everyone  for the donations and we know that there will be families in our local community who will be benefiting from all of these donations. 

Thank you also to the parents who kindly offered to help walk the children to and from the church and those that came to join in the harvest celebrations at the church.

Sporting Day

On Wednesday 16th July Sir Robert Hitchams took part in a whole school sporting day. The day started off with an assembly on high standards in sport and for the rest of the day the school was on a rotation of sports which was Handball, Tennis, Dance and Playground games. The children came dressed as their sporting heroes and really did make the school proud with their positive attitude and stamina throughout the day.

I personally wanted to say a big well done to all the children for their PE over the 2 years I have been at the school.
