Non-Stop Nursery

Nursery have had a very busy week making the most of the lovely weather by learning outside.  We visited the field twice this week enjoying running and kicking balls in the open space as well as looking at the changes we could see in on the trees compared with our previous visits.  We took part in some active storytelling together and also made some shapes with sticks and material.
On Wednesday we visited Framlingham Castle which was a super morning out. The children walked brilliantly to and from the castle understanding how to keep safe when crossing the roads.  When we got there we had a look at the outside of the castle and talked about the materials it was built from. Inside the castle we explored the echo from the well and then galloped or walked like Kings and Queens to the benches to have our snack.  After that we went inside the old poor house and watched the video while taking turns to look out of the big windows.  We could see the mere where the people who lived in the castle would have fished for fish to eat, long long ago.  We looked at the clothes and talked about the food people ate, as well as doing some crayon rubbings and looking in the big oven.  We also got to look at some books about the castle before going back outside to search for numbers.  When we found a number we practised making a big shape of it with our arms before heading back to Nursery for a play. Lovely day.

Another Fairy Tale Ending

Children and parents were treated again this week to another wonderful class celebration assembly.
Our Reception pupils in Class CH performed beautifully today, they used characters from Traditional Tales to tell a story to promote healthy living.... Prince Charming thought Cinderella had a beautiful smile - because she cleaned her teeth twice a day!

Marble Madness

In Science club, children have been making and testing marble runs!
Made out of recyclable material, we had lots of fun exploring and learning more about the design process, making adjustments as necessary. The children found all sorts of ways of adding barriers and additional walls in order to keep the marble moving through the run. No doubt there are many tweaks that needed to be made while constructing a marble run in order to get to work properly. Locating trouble spots and fixing them was one of the best lessons in this project, as well as learning to listen to other members of the team. The slopes that were almost vertical resulted in the marbles dropping too quickly and spilling out of the run. I encouraged them to think about how fast the marble was going and how that was related to the slope of each run as changing the slope changes the speed of the object rolling down it.
When it came to the testing phase, we discussed how we needed to make it a fair test- the children came up with some fantastic ideas. The children felt that we needed to use the same marble with the same person from each team releasing the marble for continuity. Each run was tested 3 times so we could take an average time. The winning team were the ones whose marble travelled through the run for the longest time.

Laws of Motion

In Science club, children constructed rockets from balloons propelled along a guide string.
They used this to learn about Newton's three laws of motion, examining the effect of different forces on the motion of the rocket. We added fairy liquid to the string to see if this made it travel any quicker.

Buzz... Buzz... Buzz.....

On Wednesday 4 May JC, LC and AB had a wonderful visit from Jane the beekeeper.
She brought in a veil, empty hive and a smoker to show each class. The class were given the opportunity to have a look inside the hive as well as smell some of the bees wax on the combs. Some of the children tried on the veil which is worn when beekeeping.
The children learnt lots of amazing facts. This is what some of the children had to say about the visit:

Amira – ‘Thank you for telling us about the bees. I learnt a lot and I am sure everybody else did too. The whole class was buzzing with excitement’.

Rupert – ‘I learnt that the queen bee has a few boys to work for her. As soon as they have done their work for the queen bee, they get chucked out of the hive.’

Charlie – ‘I learnt that bees can’t sting you when they are full of honey.’

History Timeline

Class SC have been working on a visual timeline in their outdoor area this afternoon placing where the Ancient Greeks fit on the timeline.

Thank you to the Friends

Class KM are thrilled to be using the new role play frame that the Friends very kindly purchased for The Foundation Stage Classes.
It has been lovingly constructed and varnished by Mrs Free and Mrs Mawson and is being used by an excited class KM as a story telling magic emporium.
It is beautiful!  Anyone who would like to pop their head into Class KM can come and admire it.
A huge thank you from KM ( and on behalf of the other Foundation Stage classes) to the wonderful and very supportive Friends of SRH.

LH light up the world!

LH have studied and evaluated different designs of torches and their use.  As a result, the children then designed and planned their own torches.  In addition, they examined different switches using split pins, paper clips and the conventional switch.  After tweaking their designs, LH had an industrious day; firstly making their own circuits before fitting them into the housing made from kitchen rolls.  The children then decorated their torches and evaluated them against their original designs.  Mrs Hall was so proud and impressed by the way that all the children worked together and helped each other when they became stuck.  Fantastic work LH!

The photos show:  LH industriously making their circuits;  3 different examples of the reflector part of the torch and a selection of designs.

Co-op Token Scheme

From 1 May until the end of July when you shop in the Coop you will be given a
green token to put in the collection box of your choice.
Our school will have one of the three boxes in the Framlingham Co-op
(& in Eye and in Debenham).
More tokens in our box means a bigger share of the £1000 from the Coop.

Fairytale Mash-Up!

Our super confident Reception children from Class KM delivered a wonderful Celebration Assembly today to the whole school and to their own parents.
Several favourite fairytales were mixed up in a story that delighted the audience.
What a lovely way to end the week, thank you Class KM.

Orchestra Flash Mob!

Coming to school this morning was surprising for many children - as they walked onto the playground they were greeted by our school orchestra performing a 'Flash Mob'!
What a great way to start the day!
Well done for braving the cold (& some nerves) to perform so well.  They played the Theme from Handel’s Water Music beautifully and with real musicality.
Mrs Mawson says "A big thank you to all of those in our school orchestra who turned up for the “pop up” event,  I am very proud of you all."
Of course, we must also thank Mrs Mawson, for her commitment to the orchestra and to the enhancement of music in school.

Seeds from Space

On 2 September 2015, 2kg of rocket seed travelled from Baikonur, Kazakhstan on the Soyuz 44S rocket to the International Space Station (ISS).
The seeds have been stored in microgravity by Tim Peake (the first British ESA astronaut) before they recently returned to Earth.
Classes VW and JA were lucky enough to receive some of these seeds.
The red and blue seeds were sown and will be grown for a period of 35 days.
Children will need to measure and record similarities or differences in plant growth between the two seed packets and record this on a Measurement Chart.
At the end of the experiment, we will enter our results on the national database where the findings will be analysed and published.

We'll make a prediction based on the evidence as to which packet contains the space seeds, red or blue.

Wriggle and Crawl!

This term Key Stage 1 started our new topic 'Wriggle and Crawl'. As our memorable experience we went on a mini-beast hunt near the community gardens.
In these pictures we were identifying mini-beasts using a reference sheet, after carefully catching them using the correct equipment.

Hockey County Finals

On Wednesday the School Hockey Team travelled to St Joseph's College, Ipswich to compete in the County Hockey Finals. The competition featured the top 16 schools in Suffolk who had qualified for the finals by winning their local competitions respectively. Framlingham continued its high performances at the tournament by achieving notable wins against Exning (2-0) and Helmingham (3-0) and well-earnt draws against East Bergholt (1-1) and Leiston (1-1). The only two losses came against a strong Wells Hall side (1-2) and Bawdsey (0-1) who finished eventual winners.
I would like to thank all players for their efforts and good displays of teamwork and also all parents for supporting the event. Special thanks to Mr Shakeshaft and Mr Freeman for their excellent support on the touchline.                                 Report by Mr B-K

Who's been sitting in my chair?

The reception classes were treated to a live action fairy tale yesterday!
Mrs Hopkins, Mrs Mawson, Mrs Waddell and Miss Harrison brought the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears to life in the hall for the children.
They thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, laughing (in all the right places!) and considering the moral of the tale.

Calves Close Up!

On Wednesday,  Roger and Emma from ‘Farm2Form’, Iken caused great excitement in the playground at Sir Robert Hitcham’s School in Framlingham when they arrived with three six month old Lincoln Red calves in the outdoor ‘learning zone’.
The focus of the day was to support the current Geography topic of farming and the year 3 and year 4 children were able to spend time with the calves finding out about their welfare and asking questions to find out more about other livestock on the farm.

Alongside this hands-on practical experience, three other class-based activities were used providing agriculture as a resource.
The children were able to explore the seasonal crop rotation discovering what products are made from which crops; to examine the stages of milk being produced from a dairy herd addressing the vital processes needed and what other farm animals provide, and finally, to consider “A day in the life of a farmer” in which many children were amazed at the 4am start for most farmers finishing mid-evening!
