Nursery's final Forest school fun!

Today we enjoyed another trip to Forest School, sadly our last this term.

We were spoilt in the Jubilee theme with special crowns to make using natural materials, red white and blue wools to create a wool wrapped stick and red white and blue paints to use with feather brushes.

The hammering activity was available to make our nail hedgehogs again too. We also had a slack line to practise balancing on, and plenty of water for our digging pit where the children decided to make a pond for the ducks. The mud kitchen was as popular as ever, as was the cafe and the children also enjoyed balancing and role play games amongst the trees as well as hunting for insects.

We certainly earned our hot chocolate, fruit and biscuit at snack time! Huge thanks to Mrs Waddell, our Forest schools leader, for sharing Robin Wood and her wonderful Forest Schools experience with us.

Whole School Jubilee Assembly

Today, the whole school came together to start off a week of celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee. The school council told us about the letter they sent to the Queen and shared with us the letter we received from her and her lady-in-waiting! The whole school then sung the National Anthem.

Next, Mrs Hall shared her memories of the Silver Jubilee from when she was a student here at SRH. Mrs Cann and her Worship Team led us in our collective worship and prayer.

Finally, the children were treated to two visitors who came and shared their memories of the coronation and the life of the Queen. The children even got a chance to practice their royal waves, bows and curtseys! We even held a mock coronation to show the importance of the symbolism behind the event.

Thank you so much to Mary (Mrs Ambrose’s mother) and Ann (Miss Vaughan’s grandmother).

We cannot wait to share more of our learning and celebrations with you as the week unfolds!

FOREST SCHOOL -NURSERY

On Friday the children from nursery enjoyed having a campfire. We talked about how to be safe around the fire and what we needed to light it, then the children watched the fire being built and lit.We toasted some bread, and as it was World Bee Day some of the children chose to have honey on their toast. The children then had time to explore the other activities in Robin Wood. Some learnt how to use a hammer to make a little hedgehog. There was painting using natural paintbrushes, to experiment with mark making, as well as fun in the mud kitchen. Some of the children transported water to make a very muddy pond in the digging area which they then had great fun playing in. It was a very busy morning and we were very lucky with the weather.

Clarinets in Year 3

Class KVJA have been learning to play the clarinet since September.

On Tuesday they gave a short concert to Mrs Picton.  They played Ode to Joy and gave a rousing rendition of Mamma Mia!

They all loved showing off their musical skills and their singing voices.

FOREST SCHOOL -NURSERY

This week we were excited to find out that we do have hedgehogs living in Robin Wood. We found some footprints in the feeding station that the children helped to set up last week and all the food had been gobbled up! We then looked at pictures of other animals footprints and compared them, as well as making painty footprint pictures using the small world animals.  We had a very busy morning bug hunting too and found some enormous slugs and  so looked at their lifecycle.

The children also enjoyed the den, hammocks, digging, water, mud painting, puppet theatre, balancing and mud kitchen too. It is so wonderful to do our learning together in this wonderful environment!

Class LH are on a go slow!

Class LH have been examining the habitat, lifestyle and parts of snails this week.

We created a micro-habitat using bark, leaves, damp grass and cabbage leaves.  We spent a couple of days observing them in class and noticed that the cabbage was being eaten but we never saw the snails eating it in class!  From this, we concluded that they were nocturnal.

On Wednesday, we investigated: “Do snails smell?” We placed them in between fresh fruit and plastic fruit.  Two snails started off towards the plastic fruit but then continued on and were hiding in a dark corner in the roof of a tank.  The real fruit was eaten by the snails and so we concluded that they used their feelers to find and sense the food.

Our next investigation was to find out how far the snails travelled. We safely placed a small mark on their shells, being very careful not to touch their soft foot. The children placed the snails in the quiet area.  The next day we could only find one of them which had travelled about half a metre.  We couldn’t find the others.

Today we found two more of them and one of them was next to a snail which didn't have a mark on it.  We are keeping our beady eyes open for the others in the quiet area as they may reappear elsewhere.  We talked about how they could be either camouflaged, may have found somewhere dark and damp to hide after the rain this week or have been used as part of the food chain and being eaten by a bird.

On your marks..... get set ... Go .... Runathon!!!!

Fundraising got underway this week for the 'Runathon' which will take place on the Wednesday during the Jubilee week.  School Council decided that instead of having a sponsored event or a "bring a £1 on the day" event, they chose to ask the children to save 1p, 2p and 5p coins.

This week saw the first contributions being brought in and thank you to all the children and families who have already donated this week.  Class LH had a staggering start and are well underway with their fund-raising.

School council look forward to seeing how much money can be raised from the coin collection.   Please start bringing donations into your class from now on until the Runathon ready for the big count and the big run during Jubilee week.

EACH is the charity which School Council have chosen to support for this event.

Thank you in advance for all your kind donations.

Walk Like an Egyptian...

What a wonderful display outside class KVJA - the Year 3 children have been making wonderful Canopic jars as part of their Egyptian topic.
