The Robert Hitchams School Cricket Team had a fantastic day at the County Championships on Monday. Having won the local area tournament 2 weeks ago Hitchams took part in a County tournament along with 15 other local tournament winners. Over 110 schools entered this year.The teams were divided into 4 groups.
Robet Hitchams won their group games quite comfortably and progressed into the knockout stages.
In the quarter final we came up against Ranleigh School (finalists last year). We did not play our best cricket in this match and wre fortunate to win by 1 run.
I the semi final we played Halesworth Middle School (National Champions 2 years ago) and Robert Hitchams played an almost perfect performance. We batted well with eveybody scoring well from their allocated overs. We followed this up with a superb bowling and fielding effort. In the end we won by 60 runs.
This meant that we would now play last years champions St Felix Middle (from Newmarket).
Hitchams batted first and got a reasonable score - but about 15 runs short of what we scored in the semi. St Felix had 3 boys in the County under 11 side and they proved just too strong. St Felix won by 12 runs to leave Robert Hitchams as County runners up - no mean achievement!
We were delighted to find out that we still qualified for the next round of what is a National Competition (featuring over 4000 schools) sponsored by ASDA.
Hitchams will now play against Schools from Norfolk, Essex, Cambrigdeshire, Herts and Lincs for a place at Lords Cricket Ground in the National Finals.
One of the other highlights from the day at Woolpit Cricket Club was the chance to meet James Middlebrook (professional cricketer with Essex). He gave our captain (Alfie) some coaching, umpired the final and presented the trophies.
