Our year 6 children were fortunate to take part in a lefe saving course at the Framlingham College swimming pool this week.

The course consisted of 4 sections: personal safety, life saving, CPR and general water safety.

Children doing CPR with a dummy.
Make your own float from trousers.
Swimming in pyjamas was hard work.
We owe a big thank you to Audrey (from Fram College) who organised and ran the course for our children.

NURSERY PLAY & CHAT MORNING – Thursday 24 May

Nursery parents are welcome to come along between 9.30 – 11.30am to join their children in the Nursery and to chat to the Nursery staff.

ROAD SAFETY TRAINING
As part of the curriculum we will be doing a number of activities in class (and in some cases around the town) to raise children’s knowledge and understanding of road safety over the next few weeks.
Our aim is to make the children more aware of the dangers on the roads and to make them more confident when out and about. The emphasis will be on using the Green Cross Code to stay safe, always crossing with an adult (holding hands for the younger children), looking all around and waiting until it is safe to cross. There are some parent booklets for children in Foundation, KS1 and Year 6 which will be distributed when the training takes place.
Classes LC, CA & JC will need parent helpers to assist with a ‘Traffic Trail’ around Framlingham – if you would like to help please speak to the class teachers to find out days / times.
Any help you can give reinforcing road safety messages to you children will help them become safer pedestrians. Thank you.

CORRECTION – MERE VISITS – Classes KT, EM, LC & CA
On the letters sent last week it mistakenly stated the trips to the Mere were being run by the Woodland Trust, when in fact it is the SUFFOLK WILDLIFE TRUST to whom we are most grateful for their support in educating the children about the nature around the Mere.

IF YOU ARE ABLE TO, PLEASE VOLUNTEER TO HELP WITH ACTIVITIES LIKE THE VISIT TO THE MERE, ROAD SAFETY OR SWIMMING
– WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT WE CANNOT DO ALL THESE
EXTRA LEARNING EXPERIENCES WITH THE CHILDREN. THANK YOU.

Although we have a secure intranet site at school that prevents unwanted pop-ups from happening on this site we have stopped using it at school and have found alternative sites.

Cycling Proficiency Group in Action

Our latest cycling group were taken by Mr Byer, Mr Mulrenhan and some parents to practice on Brook Lane. They got to try out a variety of signals and movements on a real road.

Girls Football Tournament

Last Friday afternoon our girls football team took part in a district tournament.
After playing 6 games against other schools (only one defeat) the girls qualified for the semi finals.
They played against a very good Debenham side and were unlucky to lose a tightly contested match.
As you can see from these action shots the girls played with plenty of skill and enthusiasm.

SWIMMING - Newsletter 35

The pool will be cleaned and should be ready for use after half-term. We hope to start swimming on Monday 11 June – weather permitting. After discussion it has been decided that Nursery children will not participate in this activity. Classes DB, GAJB, NS and EM will not use the school’s pool as they have done deep water swimming at Framlingham College.

Please could you make arrangements for your children to have swimming equipment ready to bring to school after half-term:
• swimming costume
• swim hat
• towel
• footwear to get to and from the pool.
If your child does not bring in their swimming kit they will not be able to swim.

Our pool is well balanced as far as chlorine and acid levels are concerned and therefore Goggles should not need to be worn. If your child really has an eye irritation we must have a letter from you stating the reasons why your child must wear goggles. Accidents have happened in school pools because of goggles snapping back on eyes.
To avoid the perennial problem of the small tiles in the swimming pool acting like pumice stones on tender feet, parents may like their children to wear socks or close fitting ‘swimming’ shoes (usually sold for use on a stony beach). We feel ‘jelly’ shoes would not be acceptable as they would be too restrictive.
Swimming hats (£1.00) and swimming bags (£1.80) are available from the school office.
Please ensure all items are named.
Children should take swimwear and towels home every time they are used. In this event, to help with the washing, parents may find it helpful to have a second set in reserve.

SWIMMING HELPERS
We can only hold swimming lessons if we get enough parent helpers.
Children need support with dressing and young children must be escorted to and from the pool.
The teacher must stay by the pool at all times to be with the children within the fence perimeter. Younger children must have an adult in the pool with them.
Each teacher is arranging their own timetable of help so if you can spare 1 or more hours please indicate on the timetable overleaf and pass to the relevant teacher by Wednesday 23 May.
Please try to keep to a committed time, or find a replacement. Thank you.

Volunteering - Please delete as applicable:
• I would be willing to assist in the teaching of swimming
• I would be willing to go into the pool with the younger children
• I would be willing to help with the undressing/dressing of children or be in the classroom with children.
Safeguarding – Please delete as applicable
• I have previously completed a Volunteer & CRB Form for a CRB check
• I require a Volunteer Form and CRB check – Please see the Office Staff

SATS & INTERNAL TESTING

WALK TO SCHOOL WEEK – 14 to 18 May
This item will not be relevant for children who come to school by bus.
We are keen to promote the wider health benefits of keeping active whilst also providing better promotion of road safety and sustainable travel and so we would encourage all families to walk to school this week if at all possible. Perhaps those who normally drive into Framlingham could park on the outskirts of the town and walk in from there.
Please take a look at www.walktoschool.org.uk for activities, support and ideas for children and families for that week.

SHARE SESSION CLASS RV – Tuesday 22 May
Just to remind parents of class RV, your share session is next Tuesday at 1.20pm.

To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee we are organising a day of events on Friday 1 June. We would like to give you advance warning that the children will have the opportunity to come to school in either traditional dress which represents any country from the commonwealth or they can dress up in red, white and blue.
We would like the children to bring a minimum donation of 50p for dressing up, which will be for the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust - which aims to raise funds from Governments, individuals, organisations and industry, to invest in projects that will make a real and lasting impact on the lives of people – of all generations – throughout the Commonwealth.

CORRECTION TO 2012/2013 CALENDAR
Just to point out that the calendar dates for 2012/2013 on the back of the Diary Dates leaflet have an incorrect date for the May Day Bank Holiday – it should read 6 May 2013

END OF SCHOOL PUPIL COLLECTIONS
Please can we remind parents to tell us in WRITING if someone else is picking pupils up or they are going home with another child- for ALL children in Nursery, Reception or KS1. Thank you.

CATHEDRAL ART EVENT CORRECTION
The art project in May is being done by the YEAR 5 children in class EM, not the Year 4 children as incorrectly stated in the last letter. CHILDMINDERS
We are aware that a number of children do go to childminders on a regular basis, however we have found that for many of these children we do not have the childminders details on the pupil data sheets (which the office use to contact parents if children are ill). We would appreciate parents completing the slip below and returning it to the school office to allow us to update our records and ensure we have full contact information. Please return to the office by Friday 25 May. Thank you
