Radio Interviews on BBC Suffolk

BBC Radio Suffolk came to interview staff and children in the build up to Christmas.

The first interview is with Mrs Elphick (Headteacher) and Mr G. Owen (the chair of governors and local parish priest).

The second interview was broadcast on Cristmas eve. The interviewer is talking to a group of Key Stage 1 children about their Nativity plays and about the meaning of Christmas: Tessa, Ronnie, Annie, Anna, Callum, Sam and Zac.

The 3rd interview (with the children talking about what they do on Christmas day) was broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk on 25th December.

Heating Problem

An engineer has fixed our heating.
We will be open again tomorrow.

School Closed

Today (Monday 7th Jan) the SCHOOL is CLOSED because we have no gas. This means that we have no heating or fuel for cooking.
A notice will go on the school answer phone and this blog as soon as we know about tomorrow.

TESCO SPORT FOR SCHOOLS AND CLUBS SCHEME
Thank you for your help in collecting these vouchers - we have sent off 19,598! This has allowed us to choose Skipping Ropes; Parachutes; Number Fun Mat; Cheerleader Pom Poms; Tennis Rackets and much more. Please keep the tokens coming in as we can bank them until the end of March for next year.

To work the above hours on an occasional basis when the need arises to cover regular staff

Reminders

WINTER VOMMITTING VIRUS
Unfortunately many of the pupils (and their families) have been suffering from this. The Government are recommending that children do not return to school until 48 hours after they were last ill. Please help us to restrict the spread of this illness by following these guidelines.

E-MAIL
Several parents now receive their school letters by email. This system is now proving successful and if you would like to register please do email us saying so (admin@hitchams.suffolk.sch.uk). We are endeavouring not to produce a ‘hard’ copy to those households that receive letters by email, so please ensure your child is aware they do not need to receive a paper copy. Those who are already registered do not need to re-register.

MEDICAL/ DENTAL APPOINTMENTS
We would like to remind parents that routine appointments for dental/medical reasons should be made for after school or during the holidays. We do appreciate this is not always possible, but if an appointment does have to be made during school time could parents please let the class teacher know as much in advance as possible in writing. Thank you.
The booklet ‘Attendance – a Guide For Parents’ is available from the school office for any parent who would like one. Parents new to the school will be receiving one in the ‘starter pack’ shortly.

BUILDING WORKS - ACCESS TO SCHOOL
For safety reasons, please can we remind parents NOT to walk their children through the staff car park, but to use either the path into the front playground or go across the markings on the drive and through the gate into the back playground coming out past the kitchen and into the area by the hall.

BAD WEATHER ARRANGEMENTS
We make every possible effort to ensure that the school remains open, but many of the staff do live a long way away which involves difficult cross country journeys. In the event of bad weather conditions, please listen to the following radio stations for information with regard to whether the school has to be closed or not:

TRAVELLING BY TUBA – THURSDAY 17 JANUARY 2008
A performance of Travelling By Tuba is to take place during the morning of Thursday 17 January (Nursery will be attending). The concert will span over fifteen thousand years of music starting with the conch shell from the Pacific Islands, the Viking horn from Scandinavia and the Australian Didjeridu through to today’s Tuba. There will also be compositions for piano solos, Jazz on the Sousaphone and an orchestral suite, the finale of which includes an exploding Tuba! The cost of this event is £160. We are not asking the parents to contribute on this occasion as the school will pay in full.

Father Christmas visits our school

Here he is in the Nursery. The children were very pleased to see him. He gave everybody an ice lolly and had a nice little chat with the children about Christmas.
He wishes everybody at Robert Hitcham's a very Happy Christmas.

New building week 9

The windows have been fitted this week and the builders have made good progress on the curved roof.

New building week 8

The curved roof is lifted into place.

A large crane was needed at school today to lift 4 very large pieces of wood into place. The wood was specially made in Denmark.These will form the curved roof on the new building.

Little Angel

The Key Stage 1 Nativity this year was called 'The Little Angel'.

The angel visits a number of Christmas scenes such as children eating , opening presents and a party. Eventually she she finds the really important event of the day - The BIRTH OF BABY JESUS.

Born in Bethlehem

The Foundation (Nursery and Recption) Nativity Play 2007.

The play was also filmed - a DVD will be available soon through the school office.

Nativity Plays

All of our Key Stage 1 and Foundation children are rehearsing for their Nativity plays next week. Each Nativity is being perfomed twice:

Wednesday 12th December and Thursday 13th December

Key Stage 2 have their Carol Service at the Church next Friday (1.30pm)

The choir have been practising hard with Miss Hitchcock.

Christmas Fair a great success

Our annual Christmas Fair was held on Saturday. It was organised and run by the School Friends Association. The fantastic total of £2148 raised is being put towards the playground 'trim trail'.

There was a wide range of stalls and activities including: White Elelephant, tombola, raffles, books, toys, face painting, tattoos, biscuit decorating, lucky lollies, treasure map, parent presents, soap snow men and cakes. Our caretaker Mr Jenkins also ran a 'Higher or Lower' game and won a prize himself as ' Best Dressed Stall Holder'. Many of the children organised their own games stalls.

Thanks must go to the members of 'The Friends' who laid on refeshments throughout the day.

The highlight of the day according to Georgia (reception child) was the visit of Father Christmas. He gave her a lovely sticker book and talked to her about Christmas.

Egyptian Day

On Wednesday the children in Years 3 & 4 were involved in the much anticipated ' Egyptian Day'. This was an exciting day of eating, drama, singing and study. In the morning the children in groups prepared for the afternoon activities. They had to design their own pyramid, prepare an Egyptian meal, decorate temple pillars and organise entertainment.

In the afternoon the children took part in a role play scene with the Pharoah visiting his people. Various children were ' executed' or sent to the salt mines. The highlight of the afternoon was when the Pharoah (Mr Hawes) fell off his chair.

A good day was had by all!
