Battle of the Bookworms

Today, four Year 5 students (two from ES and two from JA) visited Thomas Mills High School to participate in their Battle of the Bookworms Competition alongside another primary school and a team of Year 7 students.

Before the competition started they were able to help decorate a ‘We Love Libraries’ banner which will be displayed in the Thomas Mills library once finished. The first part of the competition consisted of several rounds with five questions each round. Each team had to agree on an answer collectively before writing it down. The rounds covered a variety of themes and included childhood classics as well as more recent titles. Mrs Vale the school librarian was very impressed with how focused and quick the pupils were at answering each question!
The primary teams were also able to come up with their own questions to test the Year 7’s with – they came up with some quite tricky ones and really showed their knowledge and enjoyment of reading. They also had the chance to play a game called ‘Literary Slam Dunk’ which involved reading / listening to a short extract from a text and then answering questions – the quickest person to raise their hand was given the chance to answer. This game was really enjoyed by the students and is one they will be able to play in their library lessons in Year 7 at Thomas Mills.
It was a very fun morning out and it was lovely to see the enthusiasm for books from our students. The competition was very close and in the end the SRH team came in Second Place with 31 points (the winning team had 32!) They received a certificate and were able to choose a selection of books to take home.
Well done to the four competitors, and thankyou to Mrs Vale and the Year 7’s and Year 10’s at Thomas Mills for such an enjoyable morning!
