Hitcham's Head chef - Week 3

Today we were joined by four brand new competitors to take part in our Hitcham's Head chef competition. We were wowed again by Tapenade Palmiers, Italian sausage risotto, Toad in the hole and Sausages with apple sauce, peas and potatoes. The children were very excited and enthusiastic and worked well to create their dishes with the wonderful help and guidance from Mr Jones from The Railway, who joined us this week as guest judge. A huge well done to all of them, their enjoyment was clear to see! We are looking forward to the desserts from these competitors next week!

Investigating our Harvest vegetables

This week in Nursery we have been looking at different Autumn vegetables and thinking about Harvest. We admired our big pumpkin in our Reflective area and talked about the different patterns and colours we could see, and we also shared the book Pumpkin Soup. The children spent some time investigating the different vegetables, using words to describe what they could see and feel, and then tried to guess what colour they might be inside. Mrs Eyles helped the children by cutting the vegetables open to see what was inside and they discovered the seeds. They also spent some time looking at lots of different types of beans and talked about planting the seeds to grow a new pumpkin or bean plant.
We are looking forward to celebrating our Harvest Festival together on Friday!

Which material is strongest?

Class AB investigated the strength different materials today. We were given the challenge of building a wall that would stay standing when a ball was rolled at it. At first we discussed how we could build the walls using either lolly sticks, newspaper or art straws. We also thought that in order for our investigation to be fair, we would need to keep some things the same. As a class we decided to keep the force of the ball the same, the size of the wall and the size of the ball we were rolling. We made a prediction as to which material we thought would be strongest. It was important that we designed our walls before we started. As we started our investigation some of us discovered that some materials became stronger when they were put together or made into a different shape. We used masking tape, sellotape and blu tac to fasten the materials together. Here are some pictures of us building our walls and some of the finished products.

Engineers in the making in year 2!

Class LH have been learning about towers and bridges as part of the "Towers, Tunnels and Turrets" topic.  We have been looking at structures and what makes a good tower and what makes a good bridge.

Towers

"We made towers from spaghetti, marshmallows and sugar cubes.  The sugar cube towers were tricky as the brown cubes weren't flat so they made a wonky tower," Betsy commented.

Teddy said, "The white sugar cubes were easy to stack as they were flat."

One of the highest towers!

Using our heads to work out how to create a taller tower!

Ella noted that is was difficult to join the spaghetti with the marshmallow because the spaghetti snapped. We used the 200g weights to start with.

Using marshmallows as junction pieces to form the shapes, we were able to start adding height to the towers.

We talked about how some structures looked like square based pyramids.

Great concentration and using teamwork to help each other.

Bridges

We talked about the suitability of different bridges, the materials they were made from and what obstacles they were used to get over.  We used newspaper and spaghetti to create bridges.  George M said,"We were seeing how strong the bridges were and we used weights to see how strong they were.  I needed to change my bridge to make it stronger."

This was a great problem solving attitude and he wasn't alone in altering his design in order to improve it and make it stronger.  Many of the children used great problem solving skills to work out how to make the bridges stronger to be able to carry the weights on them.  The strongest bridge was able to carry 800g!

Testing the bridge at the official "bridge testing site".

Many of the bridges worked at the tables but then we discovered that they didn't all carry the weight at the official bridge testing site!  India observed that the gap was wider than they had been using at their tables.

STEM Award

We are delighted to have been awarded a certificate in recognition of our school's staff commitment to working with STEM Ambassadors (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) to increase the pupils awareness of possibilities by studying STEM subjects.

Country mouse....or town mouse ....join gardening club!

We saw another industrious week of weeding and sowing in gardening club this week.  We are hoping that our newly planted Sea Holly flowers, broad beans, garlic and onions sets don't get eaten by the two very sweet little mice that were hiding amongst the plants!

Great teamwork weeding the and tidying up the old plants from the vegetable beds.

Finding missed potatoes along with worms and grubs in the beds whilst tidying out the old plants and weeds.

Raking over the ground ready to plant the onion sets and garlic bulbs in.
