Year 6 off to Camp

The children have been outstanding in their preparation for camp and the teachers are very proud of them.

Here they are getting ready for the 'off' this morning - many of them wearing their Whitwell 2021 t-shirt designed by Lily. 

Earlier this week they had lots of fun refining their performance talents in readiness for their Leaver’s Festival in the last week of term and they enjoyed multi sports on the field during the middle of the day.

In the afternoon they were able to watch films that have drawn inspiration from our Victorian topic. 

Faith as small as a mustard seed

Two weeks ago Class KVJA were given some mustard seeds by the Rev. Chris during his lower KS2 assembly about The Parable of the Mustard Seed.

We thought that it would be fun to see if we could grow some mustard plants at school using the seeds, cotton wool and water.  

Mrs Skeggs helped us to plant them and kept them watered.  One of our teachers took the trays home last weekend to water them so that they would keep growing.

We discussed the parable and its meaning and are really proud of the plants.

Today, we harvested the plants and placed them carefully under a hedge at school for any creatures to eat.

So, we are thinking about the word of God spreading from a small beginning (like the  tiny seed growing and flourishing with love and care) and the creatures that live and visit our school environment who might want to eat the mustard plants.

(Our teacher has checked and even though the leaves are a little spicy, many creatures like the flavour!)

Fens Posters now up

You may remember our post from earlier this year:

The Fens are a well known park in the town and many of us enjoy walking there and enjoying fresh air with friends and family.  It is also a haven for wildlife and nature. 

FramlinghamTown Council asked our school to design some posters using their words regarding respecting nature on the Fens. 

So, after a discussion about wildlife, conservation and respecting our environment, Class KVJA produced some great posters. The posters are going to be laminated and displayed by Framlingham Town Council around the Fens. 

We're pleased to say the posters are now up so please look out for them when you visit and follow their message. Thank you.

Great engineering work in Class LH!

Class LH have been designing, planning and engineering their own vehicles.  

First of all, we found out about the history of vehicles and transport.  We used time lines and looked at how transport has changed over the years - looking back as far as 8000BC with the first canoes right up to modern day electric cars.  We were amazed that the first car didn't even have any doors!!

Having investigated, sorted and found out about different purposes of different vehicles, we then set about designing our own vehicles with our own logo.  We had a few of our engineers redesign their vehicles before starting and were tweaking and altering the plans and the designs.  

We used our Maths to make the nets and also to measure the length of the axles for the chassis to sit on.

Once we were happy with our plans, logos were designed to go on the side of the vehicle.

Class LH were amazing with the problem-solving skills by encouraging each other and talking sharing advice with others to work out how to solve their problems.

For the axles, we measured the length of the Dowling rod and used a hacksaw to cut it.

We added on the wheels and then decorated the vehicles following our own design brief.

Mrs Hall and Mrs Morgan were blown away by how well the engineers all worked so hard and also by how they were able to sort out any frustrations and find answers out together using great problem solving skills.   It was so lovely to see. Well done to all the engineers.

Sports Day - Day 4 - VWh & VWe

After postponing their Sports Day due to the rain last week, the year 6 had a really energetic morning yesterday up at the field.

Music Tutor Retires

This week we were very sad to say goodbye to Biddy Channon who has been a Music For Schools Foundation tutor to many of our children over the last 16 years.

We marked the event by presenting Biddy with flowers, cards and presents in the Gilder Garden, with all her current pupils able to join in this event and enjoy an ice cream treat as well!  They then all had their lessons in this courtyard, which was lovely.

She will be really missed by us all and we wish her every happiness for her retirement.

Sports Week - Day 3 - KB & JT

What fun our Year 1's had in the sun last Wednesday.  

A morning packed full of events that were thoroughly enjoyed by all - with running and relay races, throwing events and a traditional sack race!

Lots of smiles all round - topped off with a cooling ice lolly!

RNLI visit to Year 1 and Year 2

The RNLI came to talk to Year 1 and Year 2 today about their role in beach safety and water safety. 

The visit really brought together some of the previous learning that we have done about the history of the RNLI including Grace Darling and where the lifeboat stations are.  Some of us were surprised when we watched a short video about how they have even rescued animals too!!  

We learnt about how to float in the water if we get into trouble, to stay together and who to call.  

We also identified the different flags on the beach and what they mean too. 

We and the RNLI would like to say a huge thank you to the families who kindly made  a donation towards this very worthwhile charity.  The children kindly donated £107 to the RNLI and Mr Cutler, the speaker, was very grateful so thank you for being so generous.  It was a very informative talk and the children learnt a lot.

Sports Week - Day 3 - CH & KM

Our Reception children in classes KM & CH experienced their first Sports Day in school last Wednesday.

Helped by lovely sunny weather the children enjoyed the running, jumping and throwing involved in their events and they all took part with great sportsmanship.
