Class LH investigate materials in and around school!

Class LH have been investigating the properties of materials in and around the school.

Last week, we used the cameras to take photos in the playground of various materials and then discussed why they were made of each particular material.  We talked about the wooden shed, the metal on the slide and the trim trail, the plastic storage containers, the glass windows, the brick walls, rubber matting under the play equipment and even our leather shoes!

This week we investigated which materials would make a good umbrella.  We used kitchen roll, fabric, plastic bags, J-cloth and cardboard to find out which was waterproof.  We all made a prediction and learnt that it didn't matter if this was wrong!  We then worked with our partners to find out which ones were waterproof. It was a fair test because we used the same amount of water on the same size of material.  If the water didn't come through,  then it was waterproof.  A lot of us thought that the cardboard was waterproof but then we realised after a short wait that actually it wasn't.

We all decided that plastic would made a good umbrella and were able to explain why the plastic was a suitable material. Some of us made correct predictions but those of us that didn't understood that it didn't matter if these were wrong!
