Incredible Film Night!

Hot dogs, popcorn, movie!

The new Friends committee held their first big event on Friday, with a Film Night screening of 'The Incredibles' to 150 children in the hall.

Many of the audience had dressed as super heroes to add to the magic of the event.

The Friends also set up a special large screen and speaker system, with mood lighting to add to the ambience.

Serving local sausages in hot dogs, along with freshly popped corn the Friends really did a great job.

We hope the children had a great time.

Nursery activities last week

Nursery had another busy week.

In PE we enjoyed moving our brilliant bodies in different ways before enjoying some parachute games. We practiced our listening skills as we made the parachute move fast and slow and high and low as we used the musical instruments to guide us with what to do - bells for small quick movements, the clacker for bigger slow movements and the tambourine to wave high as it was shaken and to then crash down low!

We have enjoyed time looking at our books together this week, especially the new ones that we got along with the whole school.

We also learnt the rhyme about the Queen of Hearts and took some time to make our own jam tarts.

Playdough and Dough Disco was fun as well, as we worked to strengthen our hands and fingers ready for writing.

And of course we have had lots of fun exploring outside too.

Scientist of the Week!

Congratulations and well done to our new SRH Scientist of the Week for correctly answering the question – “Why do birds not fall off a branch when they sleep?”

The answer was that birds have a nifty tendon arrangement in their legs. This means that when resting, the birds shift in weight causes their knees to bend and pulls on a tendon. This in turn closes the bird’s claws meaning it maintains its tight grip on the branch.

This week’s question is “Do astronauts grow in space?”

Trinity Unit

As Theologians, class VW have been studying  the Christian concept of the Trinity. At the end of the unit of learning, we explored Rublev’s Icon and considered the significance of this 15th Century painting. Many Christian’s believe Rublev was the painter to depict the concept in a unique way. We explored the symbolic nature of the colours. Each member wears blue, which represents the colour of divinity . The faces of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are the same which represents their ‘oneness’.

Maths in VW

The children in VW have started their algebra unit. Today, the children got to grips with one step equations. We discovered that a one-step equation is an algebraic equation that is solved in one step. Once we had solved it, we'd found the value of the letter that makes the equation true. We explored the rule 'change the side, change the sign' and essentially used the inverse (opposite) of whatever operation is being performed in the equation. To make our workings easier to decipher, some children used colour to help differentiate our letters and numbers.

Ooo Aar me'earties - Welcome to Year 2 Pirate Day

Class LH and Class JF welcomed aboard members of their family to their share session this afternoon all based around the pirates.  The children dressed as pirates and were all welcomed in by Captain Hall and Captain Colchester.

As Mathematicians, most of the activities involved some form of maths.  The children worked out coordinates and made treasure maps linking to Rene Descartes; played pirate based board games; made tangram boats and worked out other boats using half of regular 2D shapes.  Other word problems were tackled; books were shared; jigsaws solved; colouring enjoyed and wordsearches completed along with 'Hit the Button' on the computer... what a busy afternoon!!!

Great teamwork, cutting skills and problem solving were used.

Thank you to the family members who came - the children loved it me'earties … as did Captain Hall and Captain Colchester!!

Pirate Day in Class JT

Class JT have had a fantastic pirate day. It began with a special treasure hunt organised by Mrs Sears. The children tiptoed around the school solving the clues and eventually finding a treasure chest full of lovely treasure!

After that, they made pirate wanted posters on paper that they had previously aged with tea and coffee.

The share afternoon was fun packed with activities that included making parrots, playing pirate board games, jigsaws, colouring and sharing pirate stories. It was lovely to see so many children and their families enjoying themselves and having such a great time.

KH Pirate day!

Ahoy there! Class KH have had a wonderful 'Pirate Day' celebrating our Land Ahoy topic! This morning the children took part in designing their own wanted posters and going on a treasure hunt around the school to find Blackbeard’s treasure!

This afternoon we enjoyed having parents and grandparents join us to do pirate colouring, reading pirate books, pirate jigsaws and we even made our own parrots! In fact, we were having so much fun we forgot to take photos! It was a really special day and a big well done to all the children.

We are Mathematicians !

Class CH are busy being Mathematicians every morning.Learning and practising lots of skills such as counting, ordering , subitising  and working together !
