We have been asked by the local authority to share this with parents:Public Health England (PHE) alert on bath safety and use of bath seats.
One in three deaths from accidental drowning in children aged 0-2 involve bath seats where the parent has left the child unattended for a few seconds to fetch something. A bath seat is a useful tool, but is not a safety device. If a baby or toddler is left unattended in a bath seat for even a few seconds they can wiggle or slip out or the bath seat could tip over and immerse the baby in water. Babies can drown in just a few centimetres of water, very quickly and with no noise or struggle. This means babies need constant supervision while in water of any description. Older siblings should never be given the responsibility of looking after younger siblings in the bath.
