D- Day Commemoration- 6th June, 1944

The children in KS2 this week have been learning about the events of 80 years ago to secure the beaches of France: D- Day. During our KS2 assembly, Miss. Whipps talked about the significance of this date and shared some of the tactics the Allied Forces employed in order to turn the tide on the war. We watched a couple of short video clips: one which showed how the Axis Forces had advanced through Europe, and another of a gentleman who remembered his family's reaction to D- Day when it happened.

We talked about the chronology and how this was one of the largest amphibious attacks on the Axis Forces. We took time to think about the courage of those soldiers who lost their lives in the process. We learned that around 10,000 soldiers were either killed or wounded on that day. The courage these men showed was immense and it is important that we acknowledge them. Ultimately, D- Day altered the course of history, signalling the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany

In class this week, Class VW looked at some of the deception tactics utilised by the Allied Forces. For instance, the film industry were able to help create fake aircraft to trick the Germans. Originally, the invasion was due to take place on 5th June, but was delayed due to bad weather.  Our work evolved into some incredible descriptive writing, with children using personification techniques to describe the scene a pebble may have encountered on the beaches. They gave careful consideration to their language choices and sentence types. We're also working on our editing skills.
