Thomas Mills High School German teachers & Year 9 Language Leaders visit Year 5

This morning, we all enjoyed a visit from some very enthusiastic Year 9 linguists and their teachers. The year 9 pupils had planned a lesson for the Year 5 children and they taught the whole lesson. We were very impressed!

Our Year 5 pupils  all worked together to develop German pronunciation, vocabulary (linked to sport as this  is an Olympic year) and how to write sentences using the new vocabulary. The lesson flew by and it was fantastic to see the children so engaged, happy and keen. At the end, the children were able to ask one of the high school teachers (who was German) some questions about everyday life, food and the geography of Germany.

Some of the vocabulary and correct pronunciation:

  • Sports - Sportarten (shportarten)
  • I play - ich spiele (ish shpeeler)
  • football - (foos-barl)
  • basketball - Basketball (basket-barl)
  • tennis - Tennis (tennis)

The year 5 pupils said;

"it was really fun and exciting to learn a new language"

"it was challenging but they really helped us to pronounce the German words"

"After the German lesson, I want to start learning German"

" I enjoyed the quiz"

" I loved learning a new language"
