Class LH get the measure of teamwork!

As mathematicians, this week we have been finding out about measuring – length, weight, capacity and temperature.  Using bucket scales, we have been learning how to weigh objects in grams.  We have been investigating capacity using containers of different sizes and shapes using millilitres and litres to measure. We understand that temperature is measured in degrees Celsius and we talked about how mild it is at the moment.

As scientists, we linked our learning to our maths and did an investigation: “Do people with big feet have big hands?”  We all made a prediction about this statement and then using rulers with partners, we measured our feet and hands and then recorded the data on a class chart.  From this, we ordered the biggest feet into one list and then the biggest hands into another.  We found out that the person with the biggest feet did not have the biggest hands but the three children who had the second biggest feet also had the second biggest hands.  Interestingly, we did find out that the smallest feet had the smallest hands.

There was a great discussion about these results and if we flipped the investigation to find out “Does the person with the smallest feet have the smallest hands?” then our results would have been very different for the conclusion.  Great analysis, teamwork and discussion.
