Today, KS2 welcomed Major Squirrel from The Salvation Army, who led an inspiring assembly about life in Malawi.
He introduced us to a boy named Blessing, who walks to school by 7 a.m. each day and must pay to attend. Sometimes, the only meal he receives is a simple maize porridge. Blessing loves writing poetry, and if he forgets his pencil, he has to return home—highlighting his incredible perseverance and passion for learning.
Major Squirrel also showed us Malawi on the globe and spoke about projects like the building of a children’s centre to support vulnerable young people and prevent child labour.
Very kindly, he donated 'The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind' to our Year 6 library—a true story about a Malawian boy who built a windmill to power his home.
We are very grateful to Major Squirrel for visiting and helping us reflect on how fortunate we are.
