THANK YOU! OXFAM TURKEY & SYRIA EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

We have been overwhelmed with the generosity of our school community, who have donated a fantastic £868.69 for the Oxfam humanitarian operation in Turkey & Syria following the catastrophic earthquakes. The school will be transferring these donations to Oxfam today.

Thank you for your kindness and please keep those families impacted by this in your thoughts.

If you missed our collection but still wish to donate, you can do so directly to Oxfam

Stargazing!

As part of our exciting Science topic this term in UKS2 – Earth & Space, all the children in Year 5 and 6 were invited to an evening of stargazing last night up on the school field.

We were joined by Mr Green a STEM ambassador and also a member of DASH Astro an astronomical society on the North Suffolk coast. He, alongside some budding astronomers within our teaching team, were able to set up 3 telescopes and binoculars for the evening and because it was a beautiful evening and we had amazing clear skies, the children were able to see so many incredible celestial objects in the sky.

Children viewed Jupiter and its 4 moons, Venus, Mars, many constellations such as Pleiades also known as The Seven Sisters, Orion and Ursa Major (Great Bear) and Ursa Minor (Little Bear) as well as many satellites orbiting around the Earth.

We also had a campfire set up where the children could toast marshmallows and make yummy s’mores whist sitting round an open fire and a station where they could get a warm hot chocolate with marshmallows and cream and be told stories about the myths of the constellations.

Finally, there was an area of blankets and constellation maps where children were invited to lie and observe the night sky for themselves and see what they could identify from the maps.

It was a wonderfully special evening and thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Thank you to all the staff who stayed to help with the event.

Thank you to Mr Snowden for his excellent night sky photographs above.

Moon Phases

Over the last half term, year 6 have been learning about Earth and Space.

This week the children in VW constructed 3D models of the phases.

Art Club

The artists in art club have been busy this term. They have been working on reproducing famous art works in a medium of their choice. The artists have used paint, pastel, collage and mixed media for their designs. Once the art work is complete it will be displayed in the school. I think you would agree that some wonderful work is being produced.

Miss Turner and Mrs Sears are looking forward to welcoming Year 5 to art club next term.

Oxfam Earthquake Appeal

Dear Parents/Carers

We feel deeply about the earthquake in Turkey and Syria which has tragically  impacted the lives of so many people, including those within our SRH family.  SRH wishes to respond to this devastating news through raising funds to send via Oxfam.

Here is some information from Oxfam.

WHY YOUR HELP IS NEEDED

In the early hours of 6 February, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Türkiye (Turkey) and Syria, followed by another earthquake soon afterwards. Many thousands of people have been killed. Survivors who have been forced to flee their homes are now facing freezing temperatures. Infrastructure is heavily damaged, and we know that means people will struggle to find safe shelter, water and food.

Oxfam has launched an appeal to support people affected by this disaster. Our teams in Türkiye (Turkey) and Syria are working with partner organisations to assess the types of immediate and longer-term support that are needed to help people in the aftermath of Monday’s devastating earthquakes. The emergency response is expected to include water and sanitation, shelter and food support as well as longer-term rehabilitation and reconstruction.

Any donation, big or small, matters right now.

Parents will find a payment notification in your Parentmail account, for those who feel they can directly support our fund raising, but we will also have buckets available at the entrances to school this afternoon, Thursday at the start and end of day and on Friday morning.  The Parentmail Shop will allow you to add selected  denominations from £5.00, if you wish to contribute more, please add extra via the "optional amount" section.

Thank you for your support.

Safer Internet Day - Parent Information Session

As part of the ongoing work we do in school with the children about keeping safe on the internet, this morning we held an informative session to which all parents were invited.  Those who attended gave very positive feedback about the session and how it had armed them with information that they had previously been unaware of.

Advancements in technology mean that online safety for children is more important than ever. With young children having devices that can connect to the internet, it is important that parents and carers can keep up with ways to keep their child safe. The session helped parents and carers understand their child’s online world and build confidence to have those important conversations that can help keep children safe online.

With children spending more time online, we know that this will impact on their digital wellbeing and mental health, both positively and negatively too.

For those parents who wanted to attend but were unable to during the school day, we will be sharing some of the information via ParentMail this week.

More information can be found on our website

Safer Internet Day is coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the event sees organisations get involved to promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

This year’s theme is ‘Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online’.

Incredible Film Night!

Hot dogs, popcorn, movie!

The new Friends committee held their first big event on Friday, with a Film Night screening of 'The Incredibles' to 150 children in the hall.

Many of the audience had dressed as super heroes to add to the magic of the event.

The Friends also set up a special large screen and speaker system, with mood lighting to add to the ambience.

Serving local sausages in hot dogs, along with freshly popped corn the Friends really did a great job.

We hope the children had a great time.

Nursery activities last week

Nursery had another busy week.

In PE we enjoyed moving our brilliant bodies in different ways before enjoying some parachute games. We practiced our listening skills as we made the parachute move fast and slow and high and low as we used the musical instruments to guide us with what to do - bells for small quick movements, the clacker for bigger slow movements and the tambourine to wave high as it was shaken and to then crash down low!

We have enjoyed time looking at our books together this week, especially the new ones that we got along with the whole school.

We also learnt the rhyme about the Queen of Hearts and took some time to make our own jam tarts.

Playdough and Dough Disco was fun as well, as we worked to strengthen our hands and fingers ready for writing.

And of course we have had lots of fun exploring outside too.

Scientist of the Week!

Congratulations and well done to our new SRH Scientist of the Week for correctly answering the question – “Why do birds not fall off a branch when they sleep?”

The answer was that birds have a nifty tendon arrangement in their legs. This means that when resting, the birds shift in weight causes their knees to bend and pulls on a tendon. This in turn closes the bird’s claws meaning it maintains its tight grip on the branch.

This week’s question is “Do astronauts grow in space?”

Trinity Unit

As Theologians, class VW have been studying  the Christian concept of the Trinity. At the end of the unit of learning, we explored Rublev’s Icon and considered the significance of this 15th Century painting. Many Christian’s believe Rublev was the painter to depict the concept in a unique way. We explored the symbolic nature of the colours. Each member wears blue, which represents the colour of divinity . The faces of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are the same which represents their ‘oneness’.
