Stargazing!

As part of our exciting Science topic this term in UKS2 – Earth & Space, all the children in Year 5 and 6 were invited to an evening of stargazing last night up on the school field.

We were joined by Mr Green a STEM ambassador and also a member of DASH Astro an astronomical society on the North Suffolk coast. He, alongside some budding astronomers within our teaching team, were able to set up 3 telescopes and binoculars for the evening and because it was a beautiful evening and we had amazing clear skies, the children were able to see so many incredible celestial objects in the sky.

Children viewed Jupiter and its 4 moons, Venus, Mars, many constellations such as Pleiades also known as The Seven Sisters, Orion and Ursa Major (Great Bear) and Ursa Minor (Little Bear) as well as many satellites orbiting around the Earth.

We also had a campfire set up where the children could toast marshmallows and make yummy s’mores whist sitting round an open fire and a station where they could get a warm hot chocolate with marshmallows and cream and be told stories about the myths of the constellations.

Finally, there was an area of blankets and constellation maps where children were invited to lie and observe the night sky for themselves and see what they could identify from the maps.

It was a wonderfully special evening and thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Thank you to all the staff who stayed to help with the event.

Thank you to Mr Snowden for his excellent night sky photographs above.
