Class LH have been busy sowing the seeds of our new topic “Scented Gardens”.
As readers, we visited the school library to find books
about plants and gardens for our topic box in class. We have been enjoying reading these and
looking at all the different plants.
As scientists, we have sown our own sunflower seeds and as
writers, we have written instructions about the process.
We can’t wait to see them germinate!
We are going to have a class competition for the tallest!
We have also, as scientists, looked inside a seed to find
out about the food store, the embryo and the seed coat and their purpose. We then placed broad bean seeds in different
conditions to find out which seeds will germinate first, which will be the
strongest and which won’t change and why. We set up a fair test using the same
beans, pots and cotton wool to grow them in. We are keeping a weekly diary to
record the changes we observe and are surprised by some of the changes already.
As artists, we have been learning about the artist Georgia
O’Keeffe and her style of painting flowers.
We designed and drew our own flowers and then in the style of Georgia
O’Keeffe painted them using watercolours which we mixed ourselves from the
primary colours to create secondary colours.
We finished the detail using a black pen to outline some of the petals.
