Friends Open Meeting - Friday 21 October

The Friends Association supports the school both socially and financially. In the past, we have been very active in hosting a variety of events including Summer Fetes, Christmas Hamper raffles, Children’s Discos and Cake sales, we’ve also held Quiz Nights, Beetle Drives and other fun social evening events for parents and families. Our goal of course, is to raise money to go towards supporting school projects, outings and other extras for the children, and hopefully creating some fun for the children and families along the way.

An enthusiastic group of volunteers organise and run the events, and we are always keen to welcome new ideas, new members to join the committee and volunteers to be involved at events. Since Covid the activities we’ve run have dwindled, and we are very keen to re-invigorate The Friends, but we need YOUR help!

This Friday (21st October) at 2:30pm in the School Hall we are holding an Open Meeting where we are discussing how we can all take the Friends Association forward with new and exciting fundraising events for families and children. All parents are invited to attend please!

You’ll be able to meet some current committee members, hear about our work in the past and help shape our plans for the future.

If you have an interest in finding out more about the fundraising and events of the Friends committee at Sir Robert Hitcham's, and possibly getting involved, please can we urge you to come along on Friday afternoon.

Thank you, The Friends of Sir Robert Hitcham’s.

"And the taste of apple pie..................." (from Autumn Days hymn).

Class SBJA were lucky enough to make  individual Dutch apple pies today with Mrs Jenkins,  so were able to actually taste the flavours of Autumn just like  the words from the famous Autumn hymn above.

Everybody enjoyed cutting, weighing,  chopping, sifting, mixing, rolling, shaping, flavouring and preparing the Dutch apple pies which are actually called, Appeltaart in Dutch. This D.T. lesson followed on from our European Day of Languages when we learned all about the Netherlands. Mrs Jenkins was born there but has lived in England for 43 years. She is very proud of her heritage and today we used her special recipe from a  Dutch cookery book that Mrs Jenkins brought with her from The Netherlands when she moved here. Mrs Jenkins had to translate the recipe so we all knew what to do. Some of the words are similar to their English equivalent.

The adjectives used  by the children to describe the aroma during the baking part of the lesson were, ' flavoursome, rich, warm, Autumnal, yummy and fruity.'

Thank you to the children and Mrs Jenkins for wonderful end results today and a very enjoyable lesson with some fabulous learning.

Harvest Stay & Play in Nursery

We had a wonderful time in Nursery this morning at our Harvest Stay and Play today.

The children helped the grown-ups by showing them their morning routine. We then enjoyed performing our Harvest songs for everybody, followed by our Harvest prayer.

After that the children showed everyone around their Nursery, inside and outside, getting stuck in with all the different activities they enjoy.

Saying goodbye was of course tricky for some, but we soon bounced back, busy with storytelling, jigsaws and snack.

Thank you to all who were able to make it this time. It was so lovely to have you with us!

Share Session in Class VW

Today, the children in Class VW opened up their classroom and welcomed their adults to take part in some activities with them.

These included:

  • the use of light microscopes to view specimens;
  • ‘War Horse’ themed collage art;
  • origami poppy making;
  • maths puzzles;
  • and a selection of games.

The parents were able to look at books and the children's work on display in the room too.

Thank you to all those parents who were able to attend and share with us, it was a lovely way to spend the afternoon.  We hope you enjoyed it too?

Class LH are on the hunt as Street Detectives!

Class LH enjoyed a lovely afternoon walking around Framlingham looking for evidence of changes to buildings over the past 100 years or so.  They were using their observational skills to identify many similarities and differences of the shop frontages.  Many children noticed how some shapes and designs of windows and doors had not changed even after all these years!

The children made some great sketchings of windows, doors, roofs and chimneys along with other interesting features of buildings such as the light on the Crown Hotel, the square chimney pots in the Market Hill and there were some amazing ancient door knockers on a variety of old wooden doors.  We also spotted the old Victorian post box in Double Street and talked about the design of the new ones which will have King Charles III insignia on them.

It was amazing to see so many different aspects of the different buildings in and around Framlingham.

Thank you to the parent helpers who kindly offered to help along with our lovely teaching assistants, Mrs Morgan and Mrs Crittenden, who made the trip possible.

Stories from the Librarian

Year 1 children enjoyed story time with the Framlingham Librarian, Ms Bamford, this morning, following the opening of the school library.

She read 'Pumpkin Soup' and 'The Zoo Inside Me'.

We also made our own Lego libraries as a part of our 'Street Detective' topic.

Don't forget that its free to join the local Framlingham Library so Ms Bamford would encourage all families to pop in and register for a library card for their child, so they can come and select books whenever they like.

Share Sessions Return!

How wonderful it was to have parents in the classes yesterday with the children.

Our Year 1 teachers Mrs Hewer & Miss Turner invited the parents in to class for an afternoon session to share stories with their child.

It was a super way to end the day!

A week in Class VW

This week, the Year 6 children in Miss Whipps class have been busy once again.

We’ve been mastering long division, interpreting remainders and undertaking maths challenges.

In Science, we celebrated ‘Biology week’ by discussing the different strands of Biology and using the slides to look at different specimens.

In English/ Topic, we’ve researched the Battles of Passchendaele and Somme and addressed some key questions in relation to these.

At the end of the week, the children enjoyed a visit by the author James Campbell. After hearing his wonderful anecdotes and humour, the children paired up for a free writing task to create a short story.

An enjoyable week!

Library Reveal!

Following our brilliant (and very amusing) Official Opening of our School Library by local children's author James Campbell (see our previous post), we'd like to share with you some images of this wonderful environment that the children can enjoy.

It has been beautifully decorated by Mrs Sears, who created the woodland design which she brought to life with some amazing props.  She was ably supported by Miss Turner and Mrs Lucas with the mammoth task of painting the space, literally floor to ceiling! Have you spotted the birds above your head? The clak board arrows are changed each half term to reflect our KS2 topics - with this half term being 'Fallen Fields - WWI'.

Mrs Borg is our excellent School Library co-ordinator, she makes sure that all new books are catalogued correctly to the Dewy labelling system - just like they use in the Suffolk Libraries.  She also is terrific at reminding everyone to put the books back in the right place so that its easy for everyone to find books on the subject they're looking for.

We are very lucky to have this super resource for the children to use for their non-ficton resource.
