Week in MS

As mathematicians we have been exploring rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. We learnt the different rules for rounding and which columns give us the clues to know when to round up and down. To help reinforce this we played a rounding game against a partner to test our rounding skills.

As scientists, we have been trying to answer our big question 'Which is the most important: an insulator or a conductor?' To help us breakdown this question, we investigated different materials to strengthen our understanding of what conductors and insulators are. We placed metal, paper, rubber, plastic and glass objects into a simple series circuit to test if they conducted electricity or not. If the bulb in our circuits lit up we knew the material was a conductor as it allowed the electrical charge to flow through. If the bulb did not light up then the material blocked the electrical charge.

As authors, we have been reading and writing different versions of the story of Arthur and 'The Sword in the Stone'. Last week we wrote a comic version of it with pictures and key sentences. This week, as part of our writing assessment, we are writing it as a full narrative story. To help us with this, we explored how to describe characters from the story using effective adjectives. We collaborated to make some large word banks full of words to describe our characters' appearances and personalities. We then used thesauruses to find synonyms and expand our options.
